The epidural is used most often in childbirth in the United States. The medication cannot be given too early in labor or it will slow the progress. The incidence of other medical interventions increases once the epidural is introduced. For example, mothers with epidural anesthesia are more likely to have Cesarean births, Pitocin augmentation (to speed labor), and forceps used during delivery.
