Discussion Board 1 Activity (DBA) 4: Chapter 5

Case Study: The Struggling Tennis Player

Jordan is a first-year college tennis player. In high school, Jordan was a top performer, but since joining the college team, they have lost nearly every singles match. After each loss, Jordan says things like:

· “I just don’t have the talent to compete at this level.”

· “No matter how much I practice, I’ll never beat these players.”

· “Maybe I’m just not cut out for college sports.”

Recently, Jordan has started skipping optional practices, showing less effort in matches, and telling teammates,  “It doesn’t matter what I do—it won’t change anything.”

Guiding Questions for Your Post...  (At Least 350-400 words) (10 points )

1. Which type of attributions (ability, effort, task difficulty, luck) is Jordan making? Are they internal or external, stable or unstable?

2. How do Jordan’s statements show signs of  learned helplessness?

3. What risks might this attributional style pose for Jordan’s motivation, confidence, and long-term participation?

4. If you were Jordan’s coach or sport psychologist, what  attribution retraining strategies could you use to help Jordan reframe these beliefs and regain persistence?
