It was late July and four-year-old Joey walked in the classroom with long sleeves and pants. He kept his head down and moved very slowly. One of the other children grabbed his hand and pulled him over to a table. Joey cried out in pain. Mrs. Sheritt hurried over and asked where it hurt. Joey pointed to his upper arm. When his shirtsleeve was pulled up, she was horrified to see bruises all the way up his arm. She took him in the bathroom and, with the assistant director, had him take off his shirt. His arms, chest, and back were covered in large welts and dark bruises. Mrs. Sherritt asked Joey what had happened. Unable to meet her eyes, he looked at the floor and said, “I fell.”
