What I have learned about academic are the different variations, importance of audience, and genre. The variations of process writing versus narrative writing for example. The importance of understanding what audience you are writing to whether general or familiar with the subject you are writing about. I wouldn’t say I have been surprised as much as I have been able to broaden my thought process when writing. I used to just write without much thought about how I was presenting information or who was my audience.
Academic writing can be complex and diverse, when you apply all the different aspects of writing and take into account audience, structure, and genre.
Academic writing differed from my writing at work before attending this class because I didn’t think about structure or audience. Prior to this class I would just write what I needed to write, but I can now say that academic writing has a lot of similarities to my work, as I apply what I learn to my everyday writings. With this lesson I have determined that I would classify the primary genres I use at work as policy, procedure, and training.
