A secondary source of renewable energy is an renewable resource besides hydropower, which is a primary resource. Secondary resources represent only about 1 percent of the world electric energy creation, but that is rapidly increasing. One of the fastest growing secondary resources today is wind power.
Some advantages of wind energy are that unlike fossil fuels, wind is both renewable and sustainable. Wind will never run out, unlike coal and oil. It is also very environmentally friendly and does not create greenhouse gases when producing electricity. Using wind turbines do not create a negative effect on the air we breathe or the water we drink. Producing energy by using wind will also decrease the reliance on fossil fuels and also preserve the limited remaining supply. Wind turbines also leave a very small footprint on the actual land that is used. They are generally constructed at sea or in large open field areas. Even with the turbines present, they do not disrupt livestock, farming, or fishing. The remote locations that turbines can be installed also can provide power to small villages or research facilities that would have impractical or costly to install traditional power supplies.
Another huge advantage of wind energy is that it is continually becoming more efficient and cheaper to produce. The initial cost of installing the turbines is still a bit costly, but technological advancements have made turbine maintenance after installation very minimal. Government subsidies has also helped bring the costs of installing turbines down to a competitive level against fossil fuels. Incentives are also being offered to homeowners to install wind turbines on a much smaller scale, similar to solar panels. One of the last and very important advantages to wind energy is that it has created a large market for new jobs. The manufacturing of the actual turbine, the installation, and the maintenance are all areas that have grown in the job market.
