New technology will open up new ways for nurses to learn and deliver care. As the need for different digital technologies, like EHRs and smart, IoT-enabled devices, grows, it will be even easier to provide care that is efficient, accurate, and focused on the patient. However, nurses will need to learn how to use these new technologies in their work.

(Phillips et al., 2025) predict that the digital future of nursing will involve AI, predictive analytics and data-informed decisions to aid in early recognition of deteriorating patients, to better inform staffing and to manage population health. Digital data analytics does not replace clinical decision making but rather is part of a health professional's clinical decision making, where big data is used to inform practice. Similarly, (Wang et al., 2024) suggest that future directions for digital nursing will include more advanced IoT and smart nursing applications and devices that will facilitate real-time patient monitoring and automating tasks. Examples of this include smart infusion pumps, wearable devices and remote monitoring.

Wearable technology has significantly impacted both patient engagement with their health and chronic disease management. In reference to the aforementioned points, further stated that wearable devices enable patients to take an active role in managing themselves through a variety of means including, but not limited to, tracking vital signs, activity levels and whether or not they are adhering to their prescribed medications. Through access to patient generated data in real time, this information can also be used to enhance nursing care planning and strengthen nurse-initiated preventive strategies for these patients. This transition from the traditional episodic model of healthcare delivery to the use of continuous monitoring provides improved patient outcomes while also decreasing the rates of hospital readmission.

While digital transformation has evolved, it poses some obstacles to its implementation. A qualitative meta-synthesis conducted by (P, R.-A. et al., 2025) showed that digital health systems empowered and frustrated primary care nurses. While digital health technologies enhanced communication quality and care processes, they also resulted in more documentation for the nurse to complete and hindered many nurses’ workflow. Adequate education/training, digital literacy, and organizational support are crucial for the implementation of new technologies to facilitate a good therapeutic nurse-patient relationship despite an increase in screen time.

Digital innovation has impacted higher education, including nursing. Nursing education has been expanded globally through virtual learning platforms, virtual simulation labs, video conferencing, and AI-assisted tutoring. These tools have allowed nursing students to participate in virtual, simulated clinical experiences, and interact with other students worldwide, regardless of their physical location. As such, digital learning environments provide flexibility for working nurses seeking additional education and allow them to integrate informatics competencies within the curricula. In order to meet this challenge, nursing education must produce leaders capable of managing and developing technology within healthcare systems.

In conclusion, the emergence of digital technologies in nursing practice and education have impacted how nursing professionals are able to collect, integrate, monitor patients and learn through technology. The ability for nursing professionals to create a balance between innovation in nursing technology and human centered care will be key to creating long-term progress in this area. Nursing professionals will need to develop their own digital competence as well as critical thinking and ethics when using digital technologies to better the health care outcomes of patients while maintaining the relational aspects that exist at the core of the nursing profession.
