Climate change can be described as long-term variations in temperature and weather patterns across the world. Though some of these changes are natural, the driving force that began in the 1800s has been human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels, which include coal, oil, and gas (Shivanna, 2022). These fuels produce greenhouse gases, and this traps heat in the atmosphere and consequently cause global warming. This heating disrupts the weather and intensifies extreme events, and makes them more drastic. Such natural disasters as hurricanes, floods, droughts, and forest fires are increasingly powerful and hard to predict. This problem has been directly associated with energy production because millions of people worldwide continue to use fossil fuels to produce electricity and operate machines (Shivanna, 2022). There are four stages of disasters normally experienced, and these include mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Mitigation entails an effort to reduce the risks before the disaster takes place. Preparedness is the planning and training for emergencies. Response is the immediate response to save lives and reduce destruction. The basis of recovery is the rebuilding and restoration of the community. Calamities can increase the levels of conflict as they result in a lack of food, water, and shelter. They also have adverse health impacts, such as injury exacerbation, disease transmission, stress, and limited access to health services.
Agriculture and human health cannot be separated, as it is through farming that we get the food our bodies need to live and be healthy. Climate change, however, is mounting pressure on this linkage (Wijerathna-Yapa and Pathirana, 2022). Rising temperatures, lack of rainfall, and prolonged droughts reduce crop yields and threaten animal survival. The failure of agriculture causes scarcity of food and its increased costs, especially to people in low-income countries. This normally leads to malnutrition which affects the immune system with an effect of making the body more susceptible to diseases and slowing down the growth and development of children. Meanwhile, agriculture is also a cause of the problem of climate change because livestock releases methane and intensive use of chemical fertilizers (Wijerathna-Yapa and Pathirana, 2022). This creates a vicious cycle whereby agriculture adds to climate change and climate change eliminates agriculture. Moreover, excessive flooding can pollute the soil and water with chemicals and lethal germs, increasing water-borne diseases.
It is an immense task to provide sufficient food to the entire world and yet stay on the right side of global politics. The existence of wars, trade conflict and political unrests interrupt supply chains and prevents food aid from reaching the people who most require it. The most vulnerable countries are those that rely on food imports, particularly when global relations fail. An example of this is the Russia-Ukraine conflict that destabilized grain resources in the world and increased food prices in the whole world. To help solve this, the global community, such as the United Nations, strives to ensure the organization of food delivery and the development of the policy aimed at supporting sustainable agriculture (Mekouar, 2023). Reliance on oil-based global markets can be minimized by investment in drought-resistant crops, food production locally, and renewable energy sources to support agriculture. Political collaboration is also necessary, since no nation can address food insecurity independently.
During the preparation of this discussion, two significant DNP Essentials were integrated. First, DNP Essential II was applied when exploring how healthcare systems, agricultural systems, and disaster response systems need to be strategically planned to mitigate the compounding impact of climate change on population health and food security (ACCN, 2021). These complex systems require effective leadership at the institutional and policy levels to help coordinate them. Second, the DNP Essential VII was addressed, as the mechanisms through which the natural disasters, food insecurity, and environmental stressors directly influence the community's well-being were analyzed. This discussion supports the role of the DNP-prepared nurse in promoting preventive measures and supporting equal health results among vulnerable groups in the world (ACCN, 2021).
