Both RTDs and thermocouples are sensors used to measure heat in scales such as Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Each sensor has its own advantages and disadvantages. Thermocouples tend to be better than RFDs in terms of cost, ruggedness, measurement speed, and the range of temperatures that can be measured. Most thermocouples cost between two and a half to three times less than an RTD. Although RTD installation is cheaper it does not make up for the initial cost. The biggest selling point of a thermocouple is its range. Whereas most RTDs are limited to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit maximum temperature, certain thermocouples can be used to measure up to 2700 degrees Fahrenheit. RTDs however, are superiors to thermocouples in the area of accuracy. Their readings are more repeatable or stable and receive more robust signals and they are easier to calibrate than thermocouples. At my job we use thermocouples to measure the exhaust temperatures of the engines that run our compressors. The exhaust temps for a Caterpillar 3616 hover around 1000 degrees Fahrenheit therefore, an RTD sensor would not be able to accurately measure the temperatures. The sensor we use is the Cat 383-2988 model. It is a heavy-duty thermocouple temperature sensor. The electronic module is aluminum with a pigtail connector.
