The Background

The Savage School of Education (SSE) is a charter school in Philadelphia that has been

operating since 2012. The school enrolls about 900 students each year with a staff of

close to 120, including all job classifications. SSE provides a STEAM focused curriculum

which is aligned to its mission, vision and core values.

Themission statement reads as follows:

The Savage School of Education (SSE) is a student-centered K-8 public charter school that focuses on serving all students, utilizing curricula focused on increasing students' scientific,

technological, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) skills to support their choice of post-secondary opportunities in the new global economy.

The vision statement reads as follows:

Alumni of the Savage School of Education (SSE) will be prepared to contribute to a global economy through thoughtful, just and responsible contributions in scientific, technological, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields.

The core values of the school include justice, care, and accountability.

SSE has recently hired a new principal. Though the CEO and the Boardmembers have

remained in place, the new principal has had to recently hire a new assistant principal of

instruction and a new dean of culture and climate, adding to and rounding out the school’s

leadership team.

The new leadership team includes:

● The CEO (returning),

● The Principal (new),

● The Assistant Principal of Instruction (new),

● TheDean of Culture and Climate (new),

● The Assistant Principal for Student Supports (returning),

● The Assistant Principal for Special Education (returning), and

● The Assistant Principal of Operations (returning).

The Assistant Principal of Operations applied to be the principal but was not hired. The

Assistant Principal for Special Education previously served as the Assistant Principal for

Instruction, but took on Special Education at the CEO’s request. About 90% of the staff

are returning this year, and staff retention has been high for the past 4 years. Members of

the staff participated in the hiring process for the new principal, the dean, and the

assistant principal of instruction.

The CEO and the Board are steadfast in their commitment to themission, vision and

values for SSE.

The Engagement

The new principal recognizes that it is essential to clearly define the roles and

responsibilities of each of the administrators on the school’s leadership team, especially

since growing the team by 1 dean and 1 new assistant principal this year. The CEO and the

Board approved the new principal’s request to engage a facilitator to support a series of 5

bi-weekly meetings (each about 60minutes long) with the leadership team to facilitate

group norming, role clarity, and structuring how the leadership teamwill work together.

The CEO has requested deliverables from the group’s process, which include:

● Ameeting cadence and calendar for the upcoming school year,

● A template for meeting agendas,

● A clear understanding of how notes and next steps would be captured from

meeting tomeeting, and

● A clear document that delineates each leadership members’ roles,

responsibilities, decisionmaking authority, and tasks.

The CEO is particularly interested in fostering collaboration among the leadership team

and ensuring the team is involved in the process of creating the requested deliverables.
