Overview

In counseling, there are many different ways to approach a case, depending on the theoretical lens you are using. It is important for a mental health professional to understand these different approaches to cases and the ethical guidelines that inform the work. It is also important to understand that there is value in both traditional and nontraditional approaches to therapies. Part of a mental health professional’s role is to determine which is appropriate and when.

Directions

For this project, you will write a research paper examining a selection of counseling theories. You will begin your paper by selecting two theories from the list below:

• Psychoanalytic therapy
• Person-centered therapy
• Cognitive behavioral therapy
• Interpersonal therapy

After you have selected your two theories, you will describe the important components of them. You will also discuss how the two selected theories can be applied. Then, you will describe the APA ethics code and how it can apply to counseling situations. You will also discuss traditional and nontraditional counseling approaches and how they might be applied.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

1. Counseling Theories: Describe important components of the two selected theories. Consider the following:
   1. What differentiates the counseling theories and how are the theories similar?
2. Theory Application: Discuss how each of the selected counseling theories can be applied to a variety of populations. Consider the following:
   1. What are some examples of different populations where this theory would be useful?
   2. How might different populations have different needs in counseling?
3. APA Ethics Principles: Describe the principles that make up the APA ethics code. Consider the following:
   1. What are the key characteristics of the principles?
   2. How do these principles relate to the ethical responsibilities of a mental health professional?
   3. What purpose do the principles serve?
4. APA Principles Application: Discuss how the five general principles of the APA ethics code would apply in treatment situations. Consider the following:
   1. How might each principle be important in different treatment situations?
   2. What are the problems that can arise if the APA ethical principles are not applied?
5. Treatment Approaches: Describe the differences between traditional and nontraditional approaches to treatment. Consider the following:
   1. Why are some treatment approaches categorized as traditional or nontraditional?
   2. Why might traditional and nontraditional treatment approaches be used together?
   3. What situations might not be appropriate for nontraditional approaches to treatment?

Your research paper should be a 3- to 5-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Sources should be cited according to APA style
