If total debits equal total credits in a trial balance, is it free of errors? Explain.

No it is not error free. Just because the trial balance debits and credits equal doesn't mean that a transaction wasn't entered into the wrong account or numbers were entered incorrectly. A debit and credit can be entered at the same time which makes it harder to see the errors.
