D&B Chapter 19

1. How is punishment an “everyday occurrence” for people?

2. In PM, punishment is still considered a last resort. What are some behaviors that can occur in work settings that might warrant punishment (i.e., they need to be stopped)?

3. In behavioral terms, what is a penalty (negative punisher)? How is it different from a “punisher” (positive punisher)?

4. Why are punishers so common in business? What’s the big problem here?

5. Describe the negative side effects of punishment. With each side effect, note if you have experienced it and what happened/how it felt/what you did.

D&B Chapter 20

1. There are additional ways to decrease unwanted behavior outside of punishment, describe when these might be used.

2. Describe how and when extinction might be used in the workplace and the effects on problem behavior.

3. Correcting is another option; how do you use correcting in business? What makes correcting different from punishment?

4. Describe a scenario in which you might have to use correcting as a supervisor in the future with your staff.

5. Describe how you could use differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) in the workplace and why is it the most recommended procedure for decreasing unwanted behavior (i.e., what positive effects might utilizing DRA have?)

6. Does PM ignore discipline? Does everything only focus on reinforcement? Clarify why people might be confused here.

7. What is progressive discipline and how is it used in business settings? How is it problematic?
