1.4 Assignment: Building Your Inner Coach
Getting Started
Because you’ve chosen the life coaching and positive psychology specialization, you are undoubtedly committed to the process of growth. That growth process as it applies to your coaching client is obvious; people come to you looking for change in some area of their life. You identify where they are and where they want to be and help them devise a plan to get there. It’s relatively easy to see where others need to change but harder to see where we need improvement. But for you to be the most effective life coach, you also need to be engaging in the ongoing process of assessing your own growth points.
One of the more challenging areas of self-growth is identifying and changing feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. These negative scripts that we unconsciously repeat to ourselves often stem from earlier periods of our life. Because we’ve lived with them for a long time, we may just accept them, but it is important that you attempt to root them out. This will not only enable you to be a better life coach, but it will also allow you to be more proactive about caring for your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Identifying and changing feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy will also help you reframe mistakes or “failures” as opportunities for learning and improvement instead of accepting them as confirmation of your inadequacy.
This assignment is designed to help you identify any self-doubt or feelings of inadequacy as you prepare to implement your capstone coaching project. You will explore whether you have an inner critic that focuses on doing things perfectly or tends to be harsh if you make mistakes. A good way to push against the tendency toward perfectionism or unrealistic standards is to focus on the process of what you are learning and less on the end result. In this course, that means the process of learning the ins and outs of coaching. As you learn, you will inevitably make mistakes. But that’s okay. In this assignment, you will explore ways to turn your inner critic into an inner coach to keep you focused on the learning process.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Transform the inner critic who has limiting beliefs into a positive inner coach that pushes beyond those limits.
Background Information
Before attempting to write the paper for this assignment, watch the two videos to learn more about how the inner critic can sideline your efforts and what you can do to change the script you tell yourself.
Instructions
1. Review the video "Self Talk: Self Sabotage?" (4:46):
2. Read the article: How to Turn Your Inner Critic Into Your Inner Coach (new tab) .
3. Respond to the following in a three- to four-page paper:
a. What is one limiting belief that you currently have about life coaching that you want to change? It could pertain to your capabilities around the coaching process, what it takes to be successful, or how you relate to others.
b. Explain how this limiting belief might affect your coaching sessions in this portion of the capstone project.
c. How would you rather believe or act that would free you from this limitation?
d. What does positive psychology have to say about that limiting belief?
e. Create a turnaround statement that affirms or gives you permission to act or feel the way you described in the previous question.
f. How will you act on this turnaround statement during your coaching sessions? Be specific.
4. As part of the paper, you will need to identify sources that support your main points. Please provide two outside references, in addition to any references from your readings, in correct APA7 format, in a reference page at the end of the paper.

1.5 Assignment Journal.Preparing for the First Coaching Session
Getting Started
In the previous course, you were to identify a coaching subject that you would be using for your life coaching sessions in this course. This is related to the implementation of the life coaching portion of your capstone project and is centered around real-life coaching experiences. You will also be integrating principles of positive psychology in those coaching sessions.
You will use this journal to prepare for the first of two life coaching sessions in the course. You will conduct these coaching sessions in Workshops Three and Five.
In Chapter 2 of Becoming a Professional Life Coach, the authors suggest creating a “Welcome Packet” as a starting point for coaching sessions. This welcome packet is designed to help get the coaching relationship off on a strong foundation. It usually includes a few well-constructed questions to help the coaching subject begin to think about what they want from the coaching session. Remember, the coaching session is designed for you to help the subject identify and make progress toward their goals, so they have to be able to articulate what those goals might be.
Here are some questions you can use as a foundation. You can modify each one for a better fit with what you know about your coaching subject and to match the specific life coaching category you chose to focus on in the previous course.
· What area of your life do you want to focus on in our coaching session?
· What are you hoping to get from our coaching sessions together?
· Name three changes you would like to see in your life in the next 30 days that could be part of our coaching conversations.
· What obstacles are you aware of that keep you from realizing these changes now?
· How can I best coach you? In what ways do you best learn?
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Develop initial questions and an approach to introduce a coaching subject to the coaching process.
Background Information
The purpose of this assignment is to help you align your coaching approach with what you know about your subject. The clearer you are on what your coaching subject wants in terms of personal change, the better you will be able to modify the questions and respond to the assignment questions.
You will add this as a new journal entry to the Personal Reflection Journal you began in PSY-520.
Instructions
1. Read Chapter 2 in your textbook, Becoming a Professional Life Coach: Lessons from the Institute for Life Coach Training.
2. Open your ongoing Personal Reflection Journal that you have saved in a Word document.
3. Title this new journal entry PSY-563 1.5 Preparing for the First Coaching Session <Day, Month Year>.
4. As you write your journal during this session, your task is to modify these five questions (or add additional ones you think are appropriate for the welcome packet) to make them more specific to the coaching category you chose in the previous course. You also want to ensure that your questions align with what you already know of your subject and his/her needs in that coaching category. After modifying the questions, respond to the following:
a. Summarize how you have modified the initial questions.
b. Explain what you will say to your coaching subject as a way to orient them to your first coaching session in Workshop Three.
c. How do you intend to introduce the welcome packet to your coaching subject to get them thinking about the questions you’ve developed?
d. What principles from positive psychology do you want to keep in the front of your mind as you orient your coaching subject to the coaching process? Name at least two.
e. What obstacles (if any) do you anticipate needing to overcome between now and the first coaching session?
5. Your entry should a minimum of five modified questions and at least four substantive paragraphs of explanation.
