Slide 1 – Remote and Hybrid Work Arrangements, Employee Engagement, and Perceived Productivity
· Quantitative Research Proposal
Slide 2 – Research Problem, Purpose, and Question
Research Problem
· Remote and hybrid work have become common workplace arrangements.
· Organizations need additional evidence about how these arrangements relate to employee engagement and productivity.
Purpose
· Examine whether differences in work arrangements are associated with employee engagement and perceived productivity among full-time employees.
Research Question
· To what extent are remote and hybrid work arrangements associated with employee engagement and perceived productivity among full-time employees?
Hypotheses
· H₀: There are no statistically significant differences in employee engagement or perceived productivity based on work arrangement.
· H₁: Significant differences exist in employee engagement and/or perceived productivity based on work arrangement.
Slide 3 – Literature Review and Significance
· Remote work can provide greater flexibility and autonomy but may also reduce social interaction, feedback, and support.
· Sardeshmukh et al. (2012) found that telework can increase autonomy while also creating challenges related to support and role clarity.
· Bloom et al. (2024) found that hybrid work improved job satisfaction and reduced employee turnover without negatively affecting performance.
· Understanding these relationships may help organizations make evidence-based workplace decisions.
Slide 4 – Theoretical Framework
Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Theory
· JD-R theory explains how workplace demands and resources influence employee well-being, engagement, and performance (Bakker & Demerouti, 2007).
· Remote and hybrid work may provide resources such as:
· Flexibility
· Autonomy
· Reduced commuting
· Possible job demands include:
· Social isolation
· Technology challenges
· Reduced feedback
· Blurred work-life boundaries
· JD-R theory provides the framework for understanding why work arrangements may be associated with engagement and productivity.
Slide 5 – Research Design and Variables
Design
· Quantitative
· Nonexperimental
· Correlational
· Cross-sectional
Independent Variable
· Work arrangement:
· Fully remote
· Hybrid
· Fully in person
· Nominal/categorical variable
Dependent Variables
· Employee engagement
· Perceived productivity/work performance
· Measured using multi-item survey scales
Possible Measures
· Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-9 (UWES-9) for employee engagement (Schaufeli et al., 2006)
· Individual Work Performance Questionnaire (IWPQ) for work performance (Koopmans et al., 2013)
Slide 6 – Population, Sample, and Data Analysis
Target Population
· Full-time adult employees working in remote, hybrid, or fully in-person arrangements.
Sample
· Approximately 180–200 participants.
· Goal of approximately equal representation among the three work-arrangement groups.
· Final sample size would be supported through an a priori power analysis.
Data Collection
· Online anonymous survey.
· Voluntary participation and informed consent.
Analysis
· Descriptive statistics
· One-way ANOVA to compare work-arrangement groups
· Multiple regression may be used to examine relationships while controlling for variables such as tenure and occupation.
Slide 7 – Ethics, Limitations, and Expected Contribution
Ethical Considerations
· Informed consent
· Voluntary participation
· Confidentiality and anonymity
· No identifiable responses provided to employers
Limitations
· Self-reported productivity
· Cross-sectional data
· Nonexperimental design cannot establish causation
· Possible differences among occupations and organizations
Expected Contribution
· Provide information about whether remote and hybrid arrangements are associated with employee engagement and perceived productivity.
· Findings may support organizational decisions about workplace flexibility and employee management.
Abstract
This proposed quantitative study examines the relationship between remote and hybrid work arrangements, employee engagement, and perceived productivity among full-time employees. Guided by the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) theory, the study considers how workplace flexibility may function as a resource while isolation, reduced feedback, and blurred work-life boundaries may operate as job demands. A nonexperimental, correlational, cross-sectional design is proposed. Approximately 180 to 200 full-time employees working remotely, in hybrid arrangements, or fully in person will participate. Work arrangement will serve as the independent variable, while employee engagement and perceived productivity will serve as dependent variables. Data will be collected using validated self-report measures and analyzed through descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and regression analysis. The study may help organizations better understand how workplace arrangements are associated with employee experiences and performance-related perceptions.
