The individual and community needs that underlie the reason for my capstone research inquiry are significant and multifaceted. As a hospice nurse, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that unmanaged pain can have on cancer patients at the end of life, as well as on their families and communities. The experience of unrelieved pain in cancer patients is not only physically distressing but also emotionally and psychologically taxing, leading to a deterioration in their overall quality of life, as highlighted in the Indian Journal of Palliative Care (Khatooni et al., 2020).

The identified needs are twofold: Firstly, there is a pressing need to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients at the end of life, ensuring that they can spend their remaining days in as much comfort and peace as possible. Secondly, there is a need to support and educate caregivers, who often play a pivotal role in providing care and emotional support to the patient.

My research inquiry, which focuses on the best practices for cancer pain management with opioids at the end of life, directly addresses these needs. By investigating and understanding the most effective methods of pain management, I aim to improve the quality of life for cancer patients during their final stages. Additionally, by educating caregivers about these strategies, my research can empower them to provide better care and emotional support to their loved ones, fostering a more compassionate and comforting environment during this challenging time.

My research inquiry not only seeks to enhance the clinical care provided to cancer patients but also to benefit the broader community by promoting a more informed and compassionate approach to end-of-life care. It addresses the identified needs by offering practical solutions for pain management and caregiver education, ultimately aiming to reduce suffering and improve the overall end-of-life experience for both individuals and the community as a whole.

Nearly 2 billion South Asians globally have a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes, even at lower BMIs. (Venkat & Alka,2020). Recent environmental changes, epidemiological transitions, and lifestyle changes are essential in explaining the rise of type 2 diabetes in South Asians due to low BMI in South Asians; the unique biological reasons driving the heightened risk of type 2 diabetes in South Asians compared with other ethnicities also need to be identified. (Venkat & Alka,2020)

Dietary and physical activity components were like recommendations for the general population. Intervention studies and guidelines did not reference evidence to support the effectiveness of components included in the intervention for South Asian populations. (Muilwijk et al., 2018).Working adults have issues balancing DM-II at the target level due to lifestyle modifications, exercise, and diet plans, so according to community need, I chose the capstone project on Health Intimation of Diet and Exercise in South Asian Working Adults with Diabetes”.The South Asian population is at higher risk of T2DM, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and death than Caucasians.  (Farhat, 2023)

In my project, Quantitative methods such as pre/post-tests and surveys may collect numerical data on health beliefs, diet patterns, exercise habits, and health outcomes. Statistical analysis of quantitative data is critical in identifying associations, patterns, and trends. For a comprehensive analysis, one may use qualitative methods such as focused group discussions and interviews to explore and gather data on participants’ experiences, attitudes, and perceptions concerning exercise and diet. Such qualitative methods provide insights into the psychological, social, and cultural factors influencing health behavior.

The impact of my project is identifying the risk factors, alleviating the cause, and assisting the community with clear and concise guidance on how to prevent or lower diabetes in working adults with diet exercise according to the living environment and identifying the impact of social, cultural, and psychological factors.
