Plato on Justice
Using Book One of the Republic , complete the assignment detailed below.
I want you to present a simple outline of the definitions of justice given in Book 1 of the Republic and show how Socrates refutes (overturns) each of those definitions. You need not write a detailed essay here; all I am looking for are the main points. Feel free to restate the arguments in your own words.
Here is an example of how you might present this outline:
I. A. Definition One (Cephalus): Justice is to speak the truth and pay your debts
I. B. Refutation: It is not just to repay a debt if in doing so you cause harm to others, such as returning a weapon to a person who is insane and who might use it to murder someone.
