Discussion 1 (Tameka)
The organization I chose is Duplin County Ray of Hope.
https://wwwduplincountyrayhope.org/home Email: [email protected]. This
organization is a nonprofit organization made up of a group of Duplin County citizens that have
taken interest in improving and building up the community by using resources to help those in
need. They have provided resources to multiple populations of needy, senior citizens, homeless,
and the youth of the community are just a few they have been a resource for.
Proposal Idea
The service organization I chose will be C: Disability Services: accommodative enhancement:
accessible housing. My ideas are to help disable citizens in the community with adaptive
equipment for safe entrance to homes, or for transfers in home. This equipment would be
specific to ramps for entrance to homes, transfer bars for walls in homes, widening doorways,
handicap accessible bathrooms, and kitchens.
Describing Proposal
The proposal will provide equipment to disable citizens in the community, that had challenges
with placement of adaptive equipment for their home. These services would allow them to live
safely in their homes safely. Placement of ramps in homes would allow wheelchairs to enter and
leave homes safely. Guidelines would be put in place to determine eligibility for program.
Running head: Assignment 1 2
What community needs does the identified program or service of your organization
address? This program will allow citizens of the community with a disability to remain an
independent part of the community. This improves functional capabilities, allowing those
citizens to remain active participants in the community. This program gives them the ability to
access medical treatments, food, and other essential things out in the community.
What would an improved community situation look like?
An improved situation would allow these citizens to be less dependent on caregivers. It promotes
independence. It shows those citizens that the community cares about their needs and wants to
help them continue to be a part of the community. This would encourage the morale of the
community to help those in the community with special needs. For example, allows others in the
community to look at ways they can promote individuals with disabilities to be independent out
in the community. In a systematic review of programming for dementia caregivers, evidence
from five randomized controlled trials suggested that occupational therapy sessions providing
caregivers with education, problem-solving, and technical skills (task simplification,
communication) and plain home modifications improved patient skills, decreased their need for
assistance, and reduced behavioral occurrences among the individuals with dementia (Thinnes &
Padilla, 2011). This program can reduce the need for assistance with tasks that individuals can
perform with adaptive equipment.
What can your organization do to improve this situation?
Our organization can go out into the community and inform the citizens of our mission. We can
look for other organizations/individuals that can donate to other services, and volunteers to help
with equipment installation. We can show the community how imperative this program will be
Running head: Assignment 1 3
for the citizens in the community. We can be involved, and work with other local vendors in the
community.
How will you know if your organization’s program or service has succeeded? Success would
be measured by analyzing where the organization begins with the mission's goals. The goals will
allow the organization and its funders to know if the program is successful at the grant's end.
(O'Neal-McElrath,2019). When looking at those that have participated in the program, and
seeing the positive changes that it has on them, will show a successful outcome of the program.

Discussion 1 (Madeline )
The Employment Services Department of Human Services was chosen because I have been
victimized by the need for employment at a late age and can testify to the difficulties
encountered by older adults and disabled people seeking meaningful and reliable jobs at a late
time in their lives. This is mainly true for those attempting to reenter the work force with or
without the proper job seeking skills, attire, and interview skills of confidence due to a need for
remedial education and beginning computer skills. The choice to include remedial education and
beginning computer skills because in my years in the field of corrections and public service my
attention was focused at times on individuals who could barely write their names legibly and also
afraid to use their voice and words for many reasons.
One issue encountered as I made a choice of an HSO, and potential grant proposal basis was
deciding where I could be used most effectively. Between Disability Services: legal assistance
and advocacy for seniors, and Employment Services job training readiness available to those
fifty-five and older, with employable disabilities, and youth requiring a boost to bring them up to
basic job readiness and making them qualify for different types of employment otherwise not
available to them.
The human service organization I have selected to base my grant proposal final project on is the
Department of Employment Services. The reference site for this department is Employment
Services |U.S. Department of Labor.gov - https//www.doi.gov>agencies>eta>. The mission of
the U.S. Department of Labor is to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of wage earners and
job seekers. Improve working conditions, advance opportunities for profitable employment, and
assure work-related benefits and rights (U.S.. Of Labor, 2023).
Running head: Assignment 1 2
The organization in the city of Baltimore in the state of Maryland that has been selected to
provide services in my community and is of interest to me is the Women's Housing Coalition,
Inc. Baltimore, Maryland, known for opening doors to change (WHC, n.d.)
The Women's Housing Coalition, Inc. - Baltimore, MD is aka WHC | Baltimore, MD |
www.womenshousing.org. The WHC shares its impressive mission statement as being dedicated
to ending homelessness cycles for Baltimore City residents, individuals, and families facing
challenges of social inequities and personal disabilities. The coalition provides affordable
housing and supportive services, enabling people to achieve and sustain social and financial
stability. The league's primary focus is on women and children; they are, however, available to
serve everyone experiencing housing insecurity. The coalition also provides quality, safe,
affordable housing, case management, advocacy, life skills training, somatic, behavioral, and
mental health referrals, and access to individualized service plans tailored and suited to meet the
individual needs of each person or family (WHC, n.d.).
The focus of the grant proposal idea I wish to submit and have approved will be an added
addition to the Women's Housing Coalition, Inc. - Baltimore, Maryland, which will provide
employment opportunities to those fifty-five years old and older who are employable and who
desire to enter back into the workforce. While the services are primarily for older adults who
tend to have problems obtaining sufficient reliable employment because of age-related or
disability-type stereotyped ideas of some potential employers, the services will be available to all
individuals who have the desire and need of job training readiness skills, such as:
1. Introductory computer skills training
2. Resume development
3. Proper Attire
Running head: Assignment 1 3
4. Interview communicating skills
5. Job search and placement assistance
The targetted vulnerable community this identified program will service are older adults who are
victimized because of primarily their age or disability and in need of financial support for
employment.
An improved community situation would restore images of self-concept in the personal self and
world view of senior citizens and disabled people's ability to earn and make money
independently and be positive influences to the community. Approval of my grant proposal
would be like the beginning of a second chance in life for many previously discouraged feelings
of helplessness and hopelessness. This proposal if obtained will also contribute to the mental
beings of many individuals and help stabilize community attitudes and mental beings.
Evidence that my organization is succeeding in achieving its goals will be evident in maintaining
a solid caseload of employed adults with access to the organization for any assistance they may
encounter.
