COLLEAGUE RESPONSE (Jessica)

Nonprofits play a critical role in helping those in need and providing a helping hand. My field of work is not directly related to nonprofits, but healthcare nonprofits are all over, and I am aware of just how helpful they can be. Especially since the start of COVID-19, organizations of all kinds have been working to help others in need and nonprofits have been at the forefront of that. I have chosen a healthcare nonprofit news article related to medical care because the fight for equal treatment is far from over and organizations that work to help others in need is essential. During this class I hope to gain a better understanding of nonprofit organizations and the impact they can have on communities.

Nonprofits launch $100M plan to support local health workers.: EBSCOhostLinks to an external site.

This article is a little over a year old but addresses some important concepts. By 2023, the project discussed plans to invest a significant amount of money in 10 countries in order to help health workers in those countries care for people with limited or minimal medical care access (Beaty, 2022). This monetary donation will help with affording essential medical equipment and medication to help with fighting outbreaks in several countries who need assistance (Beaty, 2022). This article also discusses how these nonprofit groups have also helped with education about western medicine for other areas that previously were hesitant to accept western medicine (Beaty, 2022). This article also emphasizes the importance of healthcare work like this nonprofit and the need to continue raising money for organizations like this one.

COLLEAGUE RESPONSE (Brandi)

Interest in Nonprofits

I am interested in nonprofits because I can use my skills and expertise to earn a living while continuing to feel like I have contributed to the greater good of society. Working for a nonprofit will afford me the opportunity to make a positive impact by spreading awareness of the organization’s cause and helping the organization run as efficiently as possible. I hope to acquire more knowledge and insight about creating and managing a nonprofit organization in case I choose to pursue this path in the future.

News Article

The news article I chose is titled, “ Nonprofits urge president to cancel Starr County border wall construction”.  The link is  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/nonprofits-urge-president-to-cancel-starr-county-border-wall-construction/ar-AA1isUIELinks to an external site.

The article stated approximately 118 nonprofit organizations and groups have sent a letter asking the Biden administration to stop its plans to waive environmental laws to quickly build a border wall through Starr County in South Texas. Basically, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be building 20 miles of border wall in various sections of Starr County, on the Texas-Mexico border, “to deter illegal crossings in areas of ‘high illegal entry’ into the United States.” Overall, the groups are stating that border communities, wildlife and Indigenous nations deserve the same rights and protections as everyone else in America.

COLLEAGUE RESPONSE (Jennifer)

Non-profit Interest

I have never worked for a non-profit organization, but I do have a co-worker who is president of a non-profit agency NAMI (National Association for Mental Illness) Mobile. I have assisted her with projects, participated and donated to the cause for that organization. I get to witness first-hand what this organization does such as helping people who are living with mental illness and their families. This organization does annual walks, sponsor different activities and is very well known in the community. My interest in non-profit is based off my passion for helping and contributing to a meaningful cause.

News Article

This article discusses a new, more comprehensive stakeholder theory of the relationships between nonprofit, for-profit, and government sectors. The article discusses nonprofit organizations that are employee groups (unions and professional associations), shareholders (institutional investors including pension funds and endowments), community and other interest groups, government contractors, competitors, consumers, and suppliers. By viewing these organizations as agents relative to a principal for-profit (or government) organization, it is possible to hypothesize about relationships and behaviors between organizations of different sectors of the economy. This new perspective allows a better understanding of the many relationships observed in the nonprofit sector and of a much greater range of nonprofit stakeholders than is currently possible given existing theory.
