Phr-103 discussion
A difficult case. Task: Determine which example (below) is a deductive or inductive argument. In other words, classify the arguments below as deductive or inductive. It is possible that both are deductive, or both are inductive arguments. It is possible that one argument is deductive, and one is inductive. In addition, state what type of argument each example is (mathematics, df./meaning, syllogism, inductive generalization, statistical inference, analogy, causal inference, prediction, authority, signs/symptoms). One is required to state the reasons/justification for one's answers/determinations. Be clear in providing an answer and a justification for one's answer. For example: "Argument Example A is deductive because it is an argument from mathematics. It is an argument from mathematics because ..." Et cetera.
Argument Example A.
Premise 1: The label on this dowel indicates that the dowel is one-yard long.
Conclusion: Therefore, this dowel is one-yard long.
Argument Example B.
Premise 1: The label on this dowel indicates that the dowel is one-yard long.
Conclusion: Therefore, this dowel is three feet long.
