Aristotle tells us friendship—of the right kind—is critical if we are to reach eudaimonia. Aristotle describes three kinds of friendship, in Books VIII and IX of Nicomachean Ethics.

[a] Describe, fully, Aristotle’s three types of friendship and explain the implications, requirements, and reasons for each type.

[b] Popular culture offers us many examples of friendship, both real and imagined. From your familiarity with popular culture (past and present) give examples of friends who exhibit the qualities of Aristotle’s three types of friendship. Be specific as to why and how these sets of friends exemplify Aristotle’s concepts of friends.

[c] Various social media rely on the concept of “friends.” For example, when one joins “Facebook,” he or she is linked to a system of “friends.” Or, with instant messaging, one is rarely free of the environment of constant availability from the outside demands of acquaintances and friends. From a philosophical perspective determine whether such social media changes, mediates, or affects Aristotle’s concept of friendship. Be especially attuned to the requirements of Aristotle’s “best kind of friendship.”
