What is “due” for Assignment #4? – SPSS Study One Data File
Step One: Download the three “main questionnaires” and “researcher instructions” from Canvas. Read the researcher instructions carefully
Step Two: Find three participants to complete the three main questionnaires (one participant per survey). Hold onto those completed questionnaires. You will NOT actually turn in these surveys, but you will need them to help you complete your SPSS data file
Step Three: You will have a lab presentation that teaches you how to set up an SPSS file and how to enter data. Look for the lab session on your course schedule. During that lab session, have your completed three surveys with you. After you learn how to set up your SPSS file, you will enter the data from your three surveys into SPSS.
Step Four: After your lab session, save your SPSS with data from your three main questionnaires. Your file should automatically end with the file extension .sav (for example, you can name it “Study One SPSS Data.sav”)
Step Five: Upload your SPSS data file (your .sav file) to Canvas. This is the file / assignment that we will grade (5 points for the upload). Then your work for the assignment is done!
Step Six: Before the lab where you will analyze your data for your Paper II, your instructor will merge the SPSS files from all students in your section into one final SPSS file. Your three participants will thus be added to the participants that other students collected, resulting in an SPSS data file with over 100 participants / respondents. You will use this “Final” SPSS data file to run statistics. This is important, as the statistics we will run require a large number of study participants. You cannot run t-Tests, ANOVAs, or chi squares on data with only a single participant per condition, which is why we are combining all participants into one large sample!

Research Study – Florida International University – Spring, 2024
Thank you for participating in our study. We are looking at your perceptions of the new Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy that Florida International University is considering adopting in the Fall of 2024. Please read over the AI policy below and then complete the survey that follows.
Part A: FIU Generative Artificial (AI) Intelligence Policy (e.g. Chat GPT)
At Florida international University (FIU), we believe that writing is integral to thinking. We also know that writing is hard. Recent technological advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) like Chat GPT provide useful tools that can help students improve both their writing and stimulate their thinking. However, AI does not serve as a substitute for either skill.
Think about the help you get from AI as a less sophisticated version of the assistance that you can receive (for free!) from the FIU Center for Excellence in Writing. An FIU writing tutor might help you in a wide variety of ways, like asking you questions to help jump start your imagination, or steering you away from poor grammar, or helping you to identify a poorly organized paragraph. While a tutor can be helpful, they do not do your writing for you! The help you get from AI similar, but there are key differences. AI is not a person. It is a machine that is adept at recognizing patterns and reflecting those patterns back at you. It cannot think for itself, nor can it think for you. It often makes mistakes, sometimes even inventing facts or providing a biased interpretation of reality. Given both the benefits and problems associated with AI, the FIU faculty wants to make sure you know when using AI is appropriate versus inappropriate.
Appropriate uses of AI
o AI is appropriate for checking spelling, grammar, or providing synonyms (similar to the support you can receive when using Grammarly or Microsoft Word).
o AI is appropriate for rephrasing sentences or reorganizing paragraphs that you have drafted yourself.
o AI is appropriate for tweaking outlines or paper content that you have personally written. o AI is appropriate to help you brainstorm ideas for your writing project
Inappropriate uses of AI
o AI is inappropriate when it is uncited (Since it is not your idea, it constitutes plagiarism). o AI is inappropriate for use on assessments (quizzes, tests, examinations, etc.) o AI is inappropriate for paper content that should be original to you. o AI is inappropriate if it violates copyright or intellectual property laws.
Evidence of inappropriate AI use may result in an Academic Integrity report, with sanctions ranging from a zero for the assignment to an F for the course. At FIU, our goal is to train you how to write and think, and these AI policies are designed to achieve those goals.
On the next page, please provide your ratings of FIU’s potential AI policy. Please rate it even if you are not an FIU student. Imagine how you would feel if the policy did apply to you personally.

Permitted uses of AI (AI is allowed ONLY for the following items)
o AI is permitted for checking spelling, grammar, or providing synonyms (similar to the support you can receive when using Grammarly or Microsoft Word).
o AI is permitted for rephrasing sentences or reorganizing paragraphs that you have drafted yourself.
o AI is permitted for tweaking outlines or paper content that you have personally written. o AI is permitted to help you brainstorm ideas for your writing project.
Prohibited uses of AI (AI is NEVER allowed for the following items)
o AI is prohibited when it is uncited (Since it is not your idea, using it is plagiarism). o AI is prohibited for use on assessments (quizzes, tests, examinations, etc.) o AI is prohibited for paper content that should be original to you. o AI is prohibited if it violates copyright or intellectual property laws.
Evidence of prohibited AI use will result in an Academic Integrity report, with sanctions ranging from a zero for the assignment to an F for the course. At FIU, our goal is to train you how to write and think, and strict adherence to these AI policies will accomplish those goals.

An FIU writing tutor might help you in a wide variety of ways, like asking you questions to help jump start your imagination, or steering you away from poor grammar, or helping you to identify a poorly organized paragraph. While a tutor can be helpful, they let you do your own writing! The help you get from AI is similar, though there are key differences. AI is not a person. It is a machine that is adept at recognizing patterns and reflecting those patterns back at you. Since it cannot think for itself, you should probably avoid letting it think for you. It often makes mistakes, sometimes even inventing facts or providing a biased interpretation of reality. Given both the benefits and problems associated with AI, the FIU faculty want to help you understand when using AI is encouraged versus discouraged.
Encouraged uses of AI (AI is encouraged for the following items)
o AI is encouraged for checking spelling, grammar, or providing synonyms (similar to the support you can receive when using Grammarly or Microsoft Word).
o AI is encouraged for rephrasing sentences or reorganizing paragraphs that you have drafted yourself.
o AI is encouraged for tweaking outlines or paper content that you have personally written. o AI is encouraged to help you brainstorm ideas for your writing project.
Discouraged uses of AI (AI is discouraged for the following items)
o AI is discouraged when it is uncited (Since it is not your idea, it may be plagiarism). o AI is discouraged for use on assessments (quizzes, tests, examinations, etc.) o AI is discouraged for paper content that should be original to you. o AI is discouraged if it violates copyright or intellectual property laws.
Evidence of discouraged AI use might result in an Academic Integrity report, with sanctions ranging from a zero for the assignment to an F for the course. At FIU, our goal is to train you how to write and think, and we hope that you choose to follow these AI policies and help us accomplish those goals.
