Ecofeminism

The Preliminary Set Up:

Consider once more the concepts of theory and practice (especially as when concerned with the environment and environmentalism). Think briefly about a few ways you participate as an individual in the environmental movement (i.e.; Do you recycle?). Can think of an example of a policy enacted by the American government that is environmentally conscious?

Disciplinary Context: Ecofeminism

Here are two quotes from Rosemary Radford Ruether's 1975 book titled New Woman, New Earth to consider in conjunction with your Ecofeminism reading from Gaard and Gruen for this module.

“Women must see that there can be no liberation for them and no solution to the ecological crisis within a society whose fundamental model of relationships continues to be one of domination” (Reuther 1975, 204).

“They (women) must unite the demands of the women's movement with those of the ecological movement to envision a radical reshaping of the basic socio-economic relations and the underlying values of this society. The concept of the domination of nature has been based from the first on social domination between master and servant groups starting with the basic relation between men and women” (Reuther 1975, 204).

Requirements:

  1. While of course considering the quotes above: Provide 3 specific examples of forms of oppression you have witnessed being suffered by a member of a marginalized group? What are the civil rights movements associated with each of your described 3 forms of oppression?
  2. Lastly, (and this may be admittedly difficult but be creative) what are some ways you can argue for a connection between each of the three civil rights movements you listed above with being environmentally conscious, environmentally ethical, or otherwise connected with the environmental movement?

Expectations

Please post your original response by 7-30 so all replies can be posted by 7-31.

Grading

A positive and affirming reply to our classmates is always nice to see but we should also be aiming to push the conversation forward in ways that help us see new angles and insights. Both your original response and subsequent reply to a classmate will of course also continue to be graded on your ability to maintain the proper grammar and spelling befitting a professional, academic setting.
