This activity aligns with the QSEN competencies of safety, evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and informatics by requiring students to connect disease pathophysiology to pharmacologic treatment, explain mechanisms of action and medication risks, identify nursing monitoring and contraindications, and create clear presentation and poster materials that support safe medication administration and effective patient teaching.
In this project, you will choose a common patient disorder and explain how it is treated with medications. You will create a short PowerPoint presentation and a simple educational poster. The goal is to help you understand how a disease works, how medications fix the problem, and what nurses must know to safely care for patients.
1. Choose a Disorder
Pick one disorder from the list below (or request approval):
Cardiac • Heart failure • Coronary artery disease • Valvular disease • Atherosclerosis • Cardiomyopathy • Endocarditis / Myocarditis / Pericarditis

2. PowerPoint Presentation Requirements (10–14 slides)
Your presentation should be clear, simple, well organized, and mostly in bullet points.
Required Slides
Slide 1 – Title Slide • Disorder name • Your name • Course and date
Slide 2 – What Is This Disorder? • Short description • Why it matters in nursing
Slides 3–4 – Basic Pathophysiology Explain in simple terms: • What part of the body is affected • What is not working correctly • Typical signs and symptoms
Slides 5–7 – Medications Used to Treat the Disorder For each drug class: • Drug class name and example medication • Why this medication helps the disorder • Simple connection to the pathophysiology
Slides 8–10 – Important Pharmacology Points For each medication or drug class, include: • Mechanism of Action (how it works) • Therapeutic effects (what it helps) • Common side effects • Serious side effects • Contraindications/precautions • Basic nursing considerations (what to monitor, safety points)
Slide 11 – Most Important Patient Teaching Tip One key instruction the patient MUST know.
Slide 12 – Summary • The main things a nurse should remember about this disorder and its meds.
Slide 13 – References (APA 7) • Minimum of 3 current sources (within 10 years)
3. Poster Requirements (Simple Educational Poster)
Your poster should be a brief, visual version of your presentation.
Required Sections
· Title • Overview of the disorder • Pathophysiology (simple diagram encouraged) • Key signs and symptoms • Medication classes • Mechanisms of action (short bullets) • Major side effects • Contraindications/precautions • One key patient teaching point
Poster Format
· Easy-to-read layout •Minimum 18-point font • Use bullet points, not paragraphs • Include images, charts, or icons when helpful • Keep it clean and organized—avoid clutter
4. Presentation Guidelines (5–6 minutes)
Record a short presentation that includes: • What disorder you chose • How the disorder works • What medications are used and why • Nursing considerations and patient teaching • A quick walk-through of your poster
