3.1 Discussion. More than Overcomers
Getting Started
Now that you have described your version of the ultimate hero and determined your criteria for the ultimate purpose in life, what do you do when you fail on both accounts? To be sure, human heroes will fail. We will all fall short of our ultimate purpose. Yet by and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can become more than “overcomers.” We can be victorious in this life and in the next. Because of God’s love for us and the power of forgiveness, mercy, and grace, we have won the race, accepted the trophy, and are now poised to lay our crowns at the feet of our Lord Jesus.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
· Discuss a time when you failed and how you overcame that failure.
Resources
· Bible
· Video & Transcript: Overcomers
Background Information
Scripture tells us that “all have failed and have fallen short of the glory of God.” To be sure! Now, what do we do when we fail and fall short? What do we do when the enemy wants to stop us in our tracks, prevent us from continuing our journey, shame us into quiet solitude and surrender? How fast can we get back up and begin to run again? With what fortitude, grit, and resolve do we approach the race after we have fallen? It isn’t that we should never fail. It is that we should not remain in that failure. By the power of the cross, we are lifted up higher than before! God asks us for our failures—all of them. He asks us for our failures so he can create something beautiful from them. He is the God who raises the dead. He is the God who transforms trash into treasure and failure into victory. Try it. Give him your failures and see what he does in your life.

3.4 Assignment. Journal - Storytelling Techniques
Getting Started
As you may recall from PSY 520, TED talks are designed to inform listeners about an idea or topic that is important and to inspire them toward action. As you begin thinking about the TED-style talk, audio podcast, or multimedia communication tool, you will present in your final capstone course in your specialization track, you want that to be your two-fold plan: inform and inspire. The best method for informing and inspiring others is through telling a compelling story. A well-told story captures our attention and sparks our imagination. It typically has a beginning, middle, and end. Think of your favorite movie as an example. It most likely pulled you into the story by creating curiosity, then unfolded into a problem that had to be resolved, and ended with a resolution. The most popular TED talks (and there are thousands of them), similarly use engaging storytelling techniques to transmit their ideas into the minds of their listeners. Your TED talk will be a means of helping you to further explore and communicate the most important parts of your story. In doing so, it is hoped that you will also gain greater clarity on your life direction or calling.
In this journal entry, you will explore some of these time-tested storytelling techniques that you can use in your TED talk. You will be looking at these techniques through the lens of your personal story; the narrative of your life thus far, and what you want to become. That, of course, includes your personality but can also reflect important life events, relationships, aspirations you have for the future, etc. Use this journal entry to brainstorm what you might like to communicate in your TED talk that could both inform and inspire those who will hear it.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Reflect on principles of storytelling as it relates to the TED talk that will be presented in the final capstone course.
Resources
· Article: Seven Storytelling Techniques Used by the Most Inspiring TED Presenters
· Website: Academic Writer
· Website: OCLS Evaluating Sources Page
Background Information
Before beginning this journal entry, first read the article, Seven Storytelling Techniques Used by the Most Inspiring TED Presenters. In addition to the text of the article, each technique includes a video example of the principle being discussed. You might also view those videos that are of interest to help you better understand how the technique is used.
Your TED talk can be about anything that is important to you and your life journey. But remember, you are striving to inform and inspire.
In PSY-520 you created your TED Style Talk Reflection Journal, in this assignment you are going to add to that journal. Then you will submit your journal entry to the Assignment page.
Instructions
1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
2. Carefully read the article, Seven Storytelling Techniques Used by the Most Inspiring TED Presenters , and watch any of the accompanying videos that are of interest.
3. Open your ongoing TED Talk Style Reflection Journal that you have saved in a Word document.
4. Title this new journal entry 3.4: Storytelling Techniques, <Day, Month Year>. As your write your journal during this session, reflect on the following questions:
a. Which of the seven storytelling techniques best helped you think about how you might tell your story? Explain.
b. Describe in a substantive paragraph a possible topic for your TED style talk. You are not committing to any particular topic at this point. You are only brainstorming.
c. In a second paragraph, explain in detail why this topic is important to you as it relates to your personal journey/story.
d. In a third and final paragraph, discuss how this topic could potentially inspire others to meaningful action.
5. All references and citations should be in APA format

3.3 Assignment. Personality Tests Assessment
Getting Started
Reflecting on life events and current habits can give you good insight into your personality. But there are also some excellent personality inventories that can delve into personality patterns that might not be as obvious to you.
In this assignment, you have the opportunity to take an online personality assessment called the 16 Personalities Test. As the title suggests, it will gather information from your responses and reflect your personality patterns from 16 different personality profiles.
This free personality assessment will ask you to respond to 90 questions. Upon completion of the assessment, you will get immediate feedback. One of the consistent themes in this course is that of the Hero’s Journey. The feedback you will receive will characterize your personality pattern with an archetypal image similar to that found in the Hero’s Journey information you’ve already been exposed to in the course.
The feedback will also provide personality preferences in the areas of romantic relationships, friendships, parenthood, career paths, and workplace habits. You will receive a lot of potentially helpful information about your personality that you will sort out as you complete the written assignment.
As you read the personality assessment feedback, remember that the assessment is only giving you suggested ideas about your personality based on the answers you provided. You should be open to considering the feedback as valid but, ultimately, you are the one who decides whether it fits who you know yourself to be. If you wish, you can email the feedback results to yourself to keep a copy.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Evaluate the results of an online personality assessment tool.
