1.4 Assignment. Journal_ Exploring Cultural
Getting Started
We live in an increasingly multicultural environment where we must be sensitive to the cultural backgrounds, traditions, and practices of others. We can no longer assume that the typical American experience of the past pertains to everyone in contemporary society. But to make space in our living environments and in our hearts for a more multicultural landscape, we have to be flexible and learn to adapt to changing expectations for how we are to live peaceably with others who are different from us.
This adaptation process is easier for some than for others. And, whether we like to admit it or not, we all carry some degree of bias or prejudice toward others. It could be toward a particular ethnic, racial, or age group. As Christians, it’s important that we identify our biases or prejudices, but we can’t stop there. We must also identify and understand the origin of those biases. The origin is usually rooted in life experience somewhere in the past. It could be linked to an unpleasant encounter we or a family member had with a person or group, perhaps many years ago. Despite the fact that it may have been long ago, pain and bitterness still linger in the recesses of our mind. Heightening our awareness of unconscious bias allows us to turn our negative thoughts and emotions into forgiveness and grace instead of discrimination and hate.
In this assignment you have the opportunity to explore how family or cultural factors have shaped your personality. You will also take an honest look at your life experiences that may have given rise to biases and prejudices that might have taken root in your heart. Once identified, you can create a concrete action point for how you would like to work on that attitude to bring it in line with a Christ-centered perspective.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Reflect on how cultural influences have shaped both personality qualities and potential biases.

Background Information
Before you begin this assignment, make sure that you read Chapter 11 in your textbook and read the article “How Does Culture Affect the Way We Understand Scripture?” Also, resist the tendency many students have to deny they have any biases or prejudices toward ethnic, racial, or age groups. It may be politically and theologically appealing to claim no biases or prejudices, but with a little more thought and honesty, it will become clear that we all have some work to do to extend love and grace to certain groups of people that we associate with pain, disappointment, or ignorance.
Instructions
1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
2. Read Chapter 11 in your textbook.
3. Read the article, How Does Culture Affect the Way We Understand Scripture?

c. How would you like to lessen or eliminate that bias or prejudice? Be specific and concrete in your action point.
6. Your submission should be three to four paragraphs in length.

1.3 Assignment. Nature versus Nurture
Getting Started
You are unique; there is no other person on Earth that is exactly like you. No one else has exactly your genetic composition and life experience. This is true even for identical twins. They may look alike and have the same genetic make-up but they have distinct personalities. Their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are not identical. So, if it’s true for identical twins, it’s even more the case for the rest of us. But what factors are at work to account for these differences? You’re about to wade into the decades-long debate about how personality develops. Here’s the key question: Is personality more about genetics or the environment or is it a combination of both?
While you’re sorting out that question, you’ll also be tackling the related issue of whether personality traits can change over time. For example, if you are very shy as a child, can you eventually learn to be outgoing and socially confident? Or are you destined to be shy your entire life? And if you can change core personality traits, how does that happen?
As a Christian, you must consider these weighty questions about nature/nurture from a biblical worldview, the lens through which you see reality. The Bible says we are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27). What, then, does that mean for the uniqueness of your personality? What capacity does it give for changing personality characteristics? A more basic question is why bring worldview into our discussion at all.
This assignment will challenge you to think critically about all these issues and, in the process, help you to begin forming your own preliminary theory of personality development.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Analyze the nature/nurture issue regarding personality development and how it pertains to one’s worldview.
