PERSONAL LISTENING EVALUATION

Purpose:  To evaluate personal listening habits.

Answer the questions below in 200-250 words.  Spend time outside of class listening to lectures, speeches, and advertisements to answer the research questions.

1. List three reasons you tune out a speaker.  (3 pts)

2. Identify a speaker you really are motivated to listen to.  Can be a television example, or school, YouTube, podcast, etc.  Tell why you listen.  (2 pts)

3. Identify three words that are negative stimulators for you.  (Choose words other than:  cancer, examination, war).  (3 pts)

4. List three words that are positive stimulators for you.  (3 pts)

5. Why is it important for you to listen to ideas that are contrary to your own beliefs.  (5 pts)

6. Listen to one outside speakers (ministers, officials, TED talk, podcast, instructor, etc.) and indicate name, time and place.  Write down their key ideas and indicate whether they met the needs and interests of their audiences.  (3 pts)

7. Listen to five television advertisements.  (or Internet ads)  List the product being sold, the key idea, and the type of appeal used—emotional (made you laugh, cry, etc.), practical (humor, unusual situation, etc.), ethical (use of famous name, powerful person, or good/evil), rational (logical reasons, benefits to you, etc.).  How did this appeal come across?  visually, verbally?  (10 pts)
