Personal Experiences with Culture

Let's start by reading the following article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/the-white-flight-of-derek-black/2016/10/15/ed5f906a-8f3b-11e6-a6a3-d50061aa9fae_story.html , entitled "The White Flight of Derek Black."  As you read, think about an early memory you have of a time in which you interacted with someone who was culturally different than you. 

Now let's watch the following TED Talk called "The Danger of a Single Story," in which Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie  talks about her experience finding her own "authentic cultural voice." There are many ways to integrate this video into the way in which you might now be thinking about cultural experiences. 

As you are thinking about an experience with someone who presented differently from you, describe what happened and what you remember. As you explain the situation to your classmates, think about concepts from this article and the video as well as this week's reading that apply to your experience and help you perhaps to think about it differently.
