I. Introduction:
A. Attention Statement: I can almost guarantee that every person in this room isn’t benefiting from cold showers.
B. Establish Credibility: My name is _________and today we’re going to discuss why you should be adding some coldness to your shower time. I have been taking cold showers for some time and have done some research that I want to share with you today.
C. Preview: In fact, there are 3 reasons why you may be interested in this, it saves you money, prevents you from getting badly sick, and is beneficial for your skin complexion.
II. Body
A. First, taking a cold shower will save you money.
a. Taking a cold shower over a hot one reduces the amount of electricity your water heater uses during the time spent taking a shower (Breslin 1).
b. Additionally, because the body’s natural response to cold showers is different from that of hot showers, people usually decrease their water usage and report being happier with the economic results they see (Breslin 1).
c. Since over 40 percent the of energy used during your shower time is used to heat up your water, people who take cold showers save $86 more dollars annually on their water bills and electricity bills (Ketchum 1).
B. Next, let’s discuss how cold showers can help prevent you from getting sick as often.
a. Dr. Buljze research experiment found that people who took a cold shower for at least 30 seconds called in sick 29% less than the experimental control group and 54% less if they also engaged in physical exercise (Beard 1).
b. The cold temperatures make the body shiver, which is the body's autonomous response to keep your body temperature up (Beard 1).
c. This causes an effect on our neuroendocrine hormones and triggers our flight-or-fight response to release cortisol into the body which produces more brown fat, or “good fat” and improves our thermoregulatory systems to prevent us from getting badly sick (Beard 1).
d. Some of the last benefits cold showers provide to the body are reduced inflammation, pain relief, improved circulation, lower stress levels, and reduced muscle soreness (Gonzalez 1).
C. Finally, let’s look at how cold showers are good for your skin and hair.
a. Dr. Jacqueline Schaffer says that cold water tightens and constricts the blood flow, which gives your skin a healthier glow (Lindberg 1).
b. Cold water also closes and strengthens your hair cuticles, which, unlike hot water, doesn’t dry out the pores in your skin (Lindberg 1).
c. Since the skin isn’t dried out, a naturally lubricated barrier surrounds your hair and skin that leads to stronger, healthier hair over time (Lindberg 1).
d. In fact, the only cons of taking cold showers are that they won’t help you feel warmer if you're already experiencing a lack of warmth and that they are not a good idea if you are sick because it’s too hard on the immune system (Lindberg 1).
III. Conclusion:
A. Summary of Main Points: So, it’s obvious that cold showers can directly impact your finances, well-being, and appearance in a favorable way.
B. Closing Statement: No matter how you feel about the topic, it’s indisputable that cold showers are healthy for you so give them a try next time you take a shower and you may be surprised with the outcome.

Informative Speech Outline
I. Introduction:
A. Attention Getter: Did you know that Japan is the world’s largest comic book
market? According to Jovana Kentic, nearly two billion Japanese comic books
known as “manga” are sold every year (Kentic).
B. Credibility Statement: My name is _______. I have always loved comic
books and I have been making my own since I was in fourth grade. I originally
started by just drawing little stickmen talking to each other and having some silly
punchline at the end, but as I grew as an artist, I started being able to create more
in-depth storylines and better artwork.
C. Preview: Today, I will be talking about the process of creating your own comic
book, including creating the plot, creating the characters, and perfecting the
compositional aspect.
II. Body: Even though there is no technically correct way to start making a comic, it is a
good idea to have a rough idea of what steps to start with and follow through a
predetermined order, especially if you are a beginner comic book artist.
A. The first step in making your comic is to come up with an idea for your plot.
1. In Neil Gaiman’s step-by-step guide for making comics, he recommends
that you figure out the beginning, the important plot points, the climax,
and the resolution (How to Create a Comic Book: Neil Gaiman's Step-by-
Step Guide for Making Comics).
2. According to an article on creating comics on blurb.com, you have to
develop the script before you begin illustrating (Drewes).
3. Creating a comic is a huge time commitment, so you want to make sure
that when you are making your characters and your world, you find them
interesting enough to have the motivation to see your story through to the
finish.
B. The next important step in making your comic to is start world-building and
to create interesting character designs.
1. When I say the term “world-building,” I am talking about creating the
The setting of your comic.
a. You will need to consider what type of monumental structures you
would like to have in your world.
b. What kind of different cultures and governments exist in your
lands?
c. Neil Gaiman, author of the highly esteemed comic book series The
Sandman, suggests that you try to come up with exaggeratedly
intense settings for different emotions that will be conveyed in the
comic; consider how powerful emotions such as love, death, or
sadness could be represented in an outside setting.
2. After figuring out what kind of world you want to create, you have to fill
this world with residents.
a. This is the step where you take those character profiles you came
up with and create the character design concept art for each of
them.
b. A surprising amount of work goes into just the character design
process alone; it is important to consider how different designs
convey different personalities.
1. Different color palettes convey different moods.
2. Different body shapes and body languages convey different
personalities.
c. If the characters are all from the same region, they likely wear the
same style of clothing because they all have a common culture.
d. You want to keep the characters relatively simple and easy for you
to draw because you will be drawing them over and over again; if
it takes you too long to draw the main character, you’ll never
finish.
C. One of the final steps in the comic book making process is organizing your panels
to create interesting compositions for each page.
1. When organizing the panels, the direction in which you want your readers
to read the panels must be made clear.
a. The reader should be able to instinctively know whether or not to
read the pages from left to right or from right to left.
b. When creating a new composition, most artists create thumbnails
for their work.
2. You must figure out where to place your text boxes in order to make the
story more coherent.
3. One difficult aspect of comic making is making your panels convey
movement and action.
III. Conclusion:
A. Review: Thank you for listening to me talk about the process of creating a comic
book. After hearing me discuss writing a plot, creating characters, and organizing
a composition, I hope that you feel inspired to practice making your own story.
B. Closing Statement: You could create something just as spectacular as the Batman
comic series.
