Parent Interview
Parent Interviews
Students are responsible for identifying parents and scheduling the interviews. At least one interview
must be with parents who have a child with a disability or with a family that represents a different
culture or language from the student.
Before the Interview
Select (2) sets of parents, with children of different ages (birth to 8 years old). At least one interview
must be with parents who have a child with a disability or with a family that represents cultural or
linguistic diversity.
Review the interview questions & CDC Milestones
(https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/index.html) for your age groups
During the Interview
Have a printed copy of the interview questions & CDC milestones.
Ask each family all the questions. If needed, ask follow-up questions
Write down parents’ responses on the interview form which will be provided.
Write down the date, time, and setting of the interview (phone, at parent’s home, etc.).
Create a pseudonym (fake name) for each family.
After the Interview
After the interview students will upload to Canvas the (1) parents’ responses using the interview
form (https://langston.instructure.com/courses/12217/files/1076693?wrap=1)
(https://langston.instructure.com/courses/12217/files/1076693/download?download_frd=1) , (2) a cover
page with the summary of the interview, and (3) a reflective summary.
Cover page: Provide a cover page that includes your name, course title, and a brief paragraph that
identifies the families (and their pseudonym), describes their demographics and the interview setting.
See attachment for more information. (NAEYC 2a)
Interview summary: the summary aggregates (puts together) the responses from the participants. It
should be about 1-2-pages double spaced. See attachment for an example. (NAEYC 2b)
Reflective Summary: Discusses the following: (NAEYC 6d)
• how the interviews clarified your understanding of family and community characteristics, and of
howfamilies influence children’s development
