Parent Interview
This assignment addresses the following NAEYC Standards:
- Knowledge and understanding of the multiple influences on the development and learning of children. [NAEYC Standard 1b]
- Knowledge about and understanding of diverse families and the community characteristics. [NAEYC Standard 2a]
- Understanding for supporting and engaging families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships. [NAEYC Standard 2b]
- Understanding positive relationships, supportive relationships, and supportive interactions as the foundation of their work with children. [NAEYC Standard 4a]
- Written and verbal skills [NAEYC Supportive Skill 3]
- Making connections between prior knowledgeable/experience and new learning [NAEYC Supportive Skill 4]
Course Competency: 3, 4
For this assignment, you will conduct 2 interviews.
- For the first interview, you will interview either your own parent or grandparent.
- For the second interview, you will interview a parent of a young child [0-8 years of age]. If you have a child this age, you may respond to the questions yourself.
After completing the interviews, you will write a 2-page paper [less than 2 pages will not be graded] that reflects on the following questions:
- How do aspects of physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development differ today versus when you or your parent was a young child?
- How might contexts explain the difference?
- How has child rearing changed?
Your 2 page paper will include the following:
- An introduction
ü Identify the 2 people you interviewed
ü Include the times for each interview [each interview must be a minimum of 30 minutes]
ü Includes the questions you asked during your interviews [minimum of 10 questions]
ü Write a few brief sentences explaining why you should keep this information confidential
- A reflection on aspects of physical development which differ across the generations and how contexts might explain the difference. Pick at least two to three physical aspects.
- A reflection on aspects of cognitive development which differ across the generations and how contexts might explain the difference. Pick at least two to three cognitive aspects.
- A reflection on aspects of socio-emotional development which differ across the generations and how contexts might explain the difference. Pick at least two to three socio-emotional development aspects.
- A conclusion
ü Share at least three to four findings of how you feel child rearing has changed over generations.
ü And how you will use this information in your work with young children
ü Include at least two references to assigned reading to support your conclusion.
- Professional language usage, correct grammar and spelling, double spaced [12 pt font]
