The Term Project is an All But the Paper - Term Project
Overview: For this assignment, you will be required to go through the planning and preparation process for writing a research paper, but will not write the actual body of the paper. There are four parts required to be submitted for The Term Project - Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
The 4 required parts
- the clearly defined topic (your approved proposal)
- the annotated bibliography of 10 scholarly sources
- the introduction and conclusion
- the outline of your paper
Goal would be a 4-7 page research report without actually writing it - Individual. Goal for a Team 10-12 page research report.
Objectives:
- To illustrate critical reading and thinking skills through research on an oil industry related topic beyond what is presented in the text and lessons.
- Goal to help students improve their skills in analysis and communication. The Limited paragraphs and outline help students to narrow down the most important aspects of topics that need to be shared for greatest impact.
Part 1: The Topic - 17.5 points (10%)
The topic is the agreed upon topic with the final Proposal submission. In the Term Project requires a short 250-500 words paragraph defining the scope and focus of your research. This is to verify that the project stays focused on the agreed upon topic. Also sometimes throughout the research some students revise and make adjustments as information or new directions open up. Please discuss with Karen if you need to make any adjustments
This typically will come from the discussion and/or proposal submission. It does not need to be new or different from the proposal unless there was further discussion.
Part 2: The Annotated Bibliography - 70 points (40%)
Overview: In this second phase of your Term Project you will be focusing on gathering resources for an annotated bibliography. Students already started the Annotated Bibliography in the Update. 4 scholarly sources were required including annotation on: a visual, a book, a government web page, and an additional scholarly source. The Goal here is to present minimum of 10 scholarly sources that you would use to research your Term Project Research. Note: You can use the 4 already identified in the Term Project Update.
Teams: will be required minimum 27 sources
Objectives: To learn how to evaluate resources and how they apply to your specific topic. Provide evidence that you have read and understood your sources and how your topic adds to the Academic discussion on your oil related topic.
Instructions: Using the Project Update which you included an Annotated Bibliography for 4 citations among other research building parts. Do this same evaluation for 6 more scholarly sources.
For clarification - An Annotated Bibliography is a list of citations of scholarly sources, books, articles, and visuals. Each citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph (usually about 150 words - no more than 250 words per source)
The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Annotations are descriptive and critical; they may describe the author's point of view, authority, or clarity and appropriateness of expression explaining how it applies and would be used in your research.
This should encourage you to think critically about the content of the sources you are using and their relation to your own research, assumptions, and ideas on the topic.
Points to Ponder and can be used to guide the annotation.
- Provides evidence that you have read and understood your sources;
- Establishes validity for the research you have done and of you as a researcher;
- Gives you an opportunity to consider and include key digital, multimedia, or archival materials among your review of the literature;
- Situates your study and underlying research problem in a continuing professional conversation;
- Provides an opportunity for others to determine whether a source will be helpful for their research; and,
- Could help researchers determine whether they are interested in a topic by providing background information and an idea of the kind of scholarly investigations that have been conducted in a particular area of study.

Part 3: Introduction and Conclusion - 35 points ( 20%)
Objectives: In this third phase of your Term Project you will be writing the Introduction and Conclusion paragraphs as if you were writing a normal research paper.
Instructions: In response to your research, write the introduction and conclusion to this project. In the Introduction - frame the project so that the reader would know what to expect to be covered. The Conclusion would be a sum of all that you have learned from your research on the specific topic. This allows for scope understanding and ability to extrapolate from research conclusions about the specific topic.
Part 4: Outline of Subtopics - 52.5 points (30%)
Objectives:
To bring out the top 3-4 points and the 2-3 supporting points for each section. Ability to frame and organize the information researched in a way that could be transferred to a written report, or speech. This helps students narrow down which are the most important and compelling supporting arguments to the topic.
Instructions: The topic outline consists of short phrases. This approach is useful when you are dealing with a number of different issues that could be arranged in a variety of different ways in your paper. Due to short phrases having more content than using simple sentences, they create better content from which to build your paper.
Outlines use Roman and Arabic numerals along with capital and small letters of the alphabet arranged in a consistent and rigid sequence. A rigid format should be used especially as you are required to hand in your outline. See example provided to help you follow a format (see link).
For this Term Project of 4-7 pages, your outline should be no more than 2 pages in length.
For a TEAM Term Project, the team outline should be no more than 6 pages in length.
Note Visuals or quotes will not be counted in the page requirement.
Steps to Making the Outline
A strong outline details each topic and subtopic in your paper, organizing these points so that they build your argument toward an evidence-based conclusion. Writing an outline will also help you focus on the task at hand and avoid unnecessary tangents, logical fallacies, and underdeveloped paragraphs. Include any Quote or visual reference as to where it would be included.
If appropriate, organize the main points of your outline in chronological order. In papers where you need to trace the history or chronology of events or issues, it is important to arrange your outline in the same manner, knowing that it's easier to re-arrange things now than when you've almost finished your paper.
Identify the main categories. What main points will you analyze? The introduction describes all of your main points; the rest of your paper can be spent developing those points. These should be your Subtopics as listed in the Proposal.
Create subcategories. After you have followed these steps, create points under it that provide support for the main point. The number of categories that you use depends on the amount of information that you are trying to cover. There is no right or wrong number to use.
Once you have developed the basic outline of the paper, organize the contents to match the standard format of a research paper as described in this guide link.
You can add specific quotes or visual references here where they would apply.
Finally
Each Part will be submitted in the Term Project Drop box as one long document with the Parts divided up with titles. Submit in the pdf format. If you need any assistance with any part of this - please email Karen or comment your questions on the Announcement.
