Abstract 

The purpose of this research is to develop and optimize an effective training curriculum for the Small Unit Ranger Tactics Course. This project will involve the evaluation of current training methodologies, incorporating feedback from experienced instructors and participants. The aim is to enhance the tactical proficiency and leadership capabilities of the course graduates while ensuring alignment with the evolving demands of modern warfare. This research will leverage direct observations, interviews, and feedback from training iterations to refine the curriculum, ultimately aiming to produce more agile and capable small unit leaders. 

  Background 

The Small Unit Ranger Tactics Course is designed to train leaders in the principles and application of small unit tactics in various operational environments. The effectiveness of this training is critical to the development of leaders who can make decisive and informed decisions under pressure. Current training practices are effective but may not fully address the complexities and technological advancements encountered in modern warfare. This research seeks to evaluate the existing curriculum and propose enhancements that can better prepare participants for real-world scenarios.

Local Context 

The course currently follows a standardized curriculum, incorporating classroom instruction, practical exercises, and field training. However, feedback from instructors and students suggests that certain aspects of the curriculum may not fully reflect the operational challenges faced by small units in diverse environments. This study will focus on gathering data from past course participants and instructors to identify areas for improvement and potential curriculum modifications.

Personal Context 

As an instructor of the Small Unit Ranger Tactics Course, I have observed the strengths and limitations of the current training program. This research will be conducted with the support and participation of my colleagues and students, ensuring that the proposed changes are informed by firsthand experience and operational requirements. 

Research Questions 

1. What are the key tactical and leadership skills that graduates of the Small Unit Ranger Tactics Course should possess? 

2. How effectively does the current curriculum address these skills?

 3. What improvements can be made to enhance the realism and applicability of the training? 

4. What is the feedback from instructors and students on the current training methods?

  Research Design 

This research will follow an iterative process of evaluation, proposal, and implementation. It will combine qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to gather data from course instructors and participants. Observations and feedback from training exercises will also be collected to assess the effectiveness of proposed changes. 

Discovery 

Initial data collection will involve a comprehensive review of the current curriculum and training outcomes. Interviews with instructors and participants will identify strengths and weaknesses in the existing training approach.  

Measurable Actions 

Based on the collected data, specific curriculum enhancements will be proposed and tested during training cycles. These changes may include adjustments to training scenarios, the introduction of new instructional methods, or the incorporation of advanced technology and simulation tools. 

 Reflection

Feedback will be gathered through regular debriefs and surveys following each training cycle. Data will be analyzed to determine the impact of the changes on student performance and overall course effectiveness.

Data will be collected through structured interviews and surveys. Participants will include current and former course instructors and students. Survey results will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data will be coded and analyzed for recurring themes and insights.
