Pornography Analysis DESCRIPTION: This assignment is a miniature content analysis of pornography. The idea is to have you put your “sociology glasses” on and examine pornography with a critical sociological lens. Researchers use content analysis to study textual material in a systematic manner. It’s a conceptual documentation focusing on thematic trends, identifying categories and developing theoretical frameworks. Think of this assignment as you would a book review, but it’s a video review/analysis. I’m calling this a “miniature” analysis as we are examining the material on a surface level rather than a methodical research paper. INSTRUCTIONS: Go to www.Redtube.com and analyze what you see on the site. Use the questions below as a guide. You don’t need to answer all of the questions and can add more analysis as you see fit. First, examine the front page and then pick a “category” of your choosing to describe what you see. If you are comfortable, pick a few samples to watch, otherwise just analyze the titles and still images. Create a works cited at the end documenting the website and videos you examined. You can use APA, MLA, Chicago Style, or any other acceptable citation method. Your analysis should be 2-3 pages double spaced. Things to look out for: What are some of the titles on the front page? Is there a theme in the titles? Do you notice any trends or similarities? What is the overall scene? Is there a theme or situational context? (ie, teen girls, bondage, bored housewives, etc.) Who are the sex workers? (ie, men, women, race, age, etc.) What kinds of sexual activity is depicted? What sexual orientations are presented? Heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, etc. Who is having sex with who? Who’s pleasure is the focus? How does the scene end? Does there appear to be gender equality or gender stereotypes? Is there violence or sexual aggression? By whom? How does the recipient of the violence respond? (Ex: gagging, spanking, choking, rape fantasy) Does there appear to be demeaning or aggressive behavior toward women? Are women objectified? Does it appear to be professionally produced? Or amateur? What is the overall intent of the producers? Is there a message? What do the ads on the site look like? What personal reflection do you have about this assignment? Content Warning: Please be advised that you will be exposed to sexually suggestive material. Many of you may already be consumers of pornography. For this assignment, you will examine pornography as an outsider, not for entertainment purposes. Others in the class may not be familiar with pornography and may feel uncomfortable.
