How Do Bills Impact You? A bill, either public or private, is a proposed law which must pass through three readings in either the House of Commons or Senate, depending where it originates. Once it passes through one of the houses, it must now follow the same process of three readings in the second house. After the second reading, the bill reaches the committee stage where members analyze the bill ″word for word″ and where citizens can still add input. Once the bill passes three readings in both houses, it receives Royal Assent from the Governor General. Royal Assent gives the law enactment. It is now the law. Few private members′ bills pass into law as the procedure for making the law is complex and requires a great deal of support. Write your own idea for such a bill in three to five sentences and respond to someone′s bill proposal with a question. OR Use this LEGISINFO website to find out about a bill that is before a committee or one that has recently been passed. Label the bill and describe it in three to five sentences.
