The goals of the famous longitudinal study of boys by Wolfgang, Figlio, and Sellin were to determine the age when delinquency started, its progression or cessation, and the relationship of the delinquent behavior to various personal and social characteristics. But to study delinquents, one must define delinquency. The investigators decided against specifying delinquents as those who had been adjudicated, because ″we would have had to ignore police data except when they applied to boys whose involvement in delinquent events was subsequently affirmed by a court decision” and doing so would have led to the inclusion of boys with many police contacts among the controls, defined as non-delinquents. Accordingly, they used police records to identify delinquents on the basis of police contact. 1. What do you think of that decision and approach? 2. If you have objections, how would you identify delinquents so that you could compare them with those in a control group identified as non-delinquents?
