You will write an essay of between 1000-1500 words, using MLA Format 8th edition, in which you will apply one of the critical approaches important to the study of literature from 1566-1588 to analyze a specific short story. ″How to Write A Literary Analysis Essay″ will help you as you develop and support an analytical argument about the short story in your essay. You can pick any short story from Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing, except for the one you used in the Unit One essay. The stories are found between 80-499. You can either choose a story we have covered or one we have not. You should name the critical approach in some way in the title, but you do not and probably should not name it directly in the thesis. For instance, Chopin uses the symbolism of Mrs. Mallard’s heart trouble to critique how women are belittled in marriage is a stronger thesis than Chopin uses a feminist approach in “The Story of an Hour” even though both are looking at the story through the lens of feminism. the institution of marriage.” In addition, you will incorporate some research material into your essay. But the focus of the essay is your analysis; the research material should only support your points. You can use sources on the short story itself, on the historical background of the work, the critical approach you are using, etc. You just need to make sure whatever type of source you use helps you develop the thesis. You must use evidence from one to two secondary, scholarly source, such as an article or ebook from GALILEO, or from a book that you found in GIL. Those sources must be cited in proper MLA format throughout the essay and in a works cited page. You of course must also use evidence, including direct quotes, from your primary source, which is the short story you are analyzing. Your essay needs to be divided into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You need to have a clear, focused, argumentative thesis statement, topic sentences for your body paragraphs, in-text citations for your evidence, and a works cited, folllowing MLA format, in which you should have the short story you are analyzing and your two or three secondary sources. However, the works cited does not contribute toward the word count of 1000-1500 words. You are strongly encouraged to seek feedback from others on this assignment. If you are an on-campus student, tutors in any of the Learning and Tutoring Centers (https://success.students.gsu.edu/learning-tutoring-center/) can review the essay at any stage with you and help you revise and edit.
