In other words, is she successfully able to blend her Iranian culture in with her other interests and outside cultures, or is every cultural trait and interest segmented into separate pieces of her life and character? Another way to think about this is to consider if she is able to successfully blend both Iranian, American, and other cultures into her own personality. If she is, and is still able to be who she is in Iran, then she is a representation of a cultural melting pot. If she is not, then she is a representation of a cultural mosaic. After arriving at your conclusion, compose a formal, academic essay of 2 pages analyzing different parts of Persepolis to support your answer. The graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is an autobiography of Satrapi’s life growing up in Iran during the 1980s. During that time, the Shah resigned and the Islamic Revolution occurred—these two major historical events heavily impacted Satrapi, leading her to create Persepolis. The novel is given from the perspective of Marji, a nine year old girl who witnesses many cultural changes, transitions, and ideologies while growing up. In Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis, Marji is a representation of a cultural mosaic. She is a representation of a cultural mosaic because she is unable to reconcile her political beliefs with her religion, she has a hard time following the Islamic laws, and she is very outspoken and opinionated in a country where those personality traits are looked down upon. These traits do not merge together well leading readers to see that she is more a representation of a cultural mosaic than a melting pot. Marji is a representation of a cultural mosaic because she is unable to reconcile her political beliefs with her religious ones. In the chapter “The Bicycle” Marji is obsessed with the revolution—she is focused on what she called “dialetic materialism” (Satrapi 12) and pretends to be both Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. However, she becomes so immersed with these political ideologies that she loses sight of her faith. As Marji is trying on her revolutionary costumes, she realizes God is not in the room and begins searching for him but to no avail: “Where are you? Are you th ere?...God, where are you?” (Satrapi 16-17). Marji cannot find God in her life at this point. This example is a physical manifestation of Marji’s disconnection with her spiritual and religious beliefs. It furthermore shows that she cannot be both interested in politics and religion at the same time, which therefore shows that her character is a representation of a cultural mosaic.
