Ethical reasoning is required in business because laws do not always tell leaders what the right decision is. Weiss (2022) explains three main reasons ethical reasoning is necessary.

First, laws cannot cover every situation or gray area. A decision may be legal but still unfair or harmful. Second, markets and regulations do not always tell managers how to respond to complex problems. During COVID-19, businesses had to balance employee safety, financial survival, customer needs, and the interests of other stakeholders. Third, difficult moral problems require fairness, justice, and due process.

The Madoff case also shows what can happen when ethical reasoning fails. Fraud, ignored warning signs, and weak oversight caused serious harm to investors and other stakeholders. Lingwall (2022) similarly explains that managers must evaluate legal risks and possible consequences when making business decisions.

I would add a fourth reason: ethical reasoning builds trust and accountability. During my Army career, I worked in the Inspector General’s office, where part of our responsibility involved addressing complaints, standards of conduct, compliance concerns, and possible violations. That experience showed me the importance of fair, consistent, and ethical decision-making.

For me, ethical reasoning means asking not only what a business can legally do, but what it should responsibly do.

Ethical reasoning is essential in business because legal compliance alone does not guarantee sound decision-making. Weiss (2022) identifies three reasons ethical reasoning is necessary. First, laws cannot anticipate every situation, leaving gray areas where managers must exercise judgment. Second, markets and government regulations do not always provide sufficient guidance when organizations encounter complex ethical dilemmas. Third, difficult moral questions require leaders to consider fairness, justice, and due process when making decisions (Weiss, 2022). These reasons align with my own observations because workplace decisions can affect individuals in ways that policy alone cannot address. I propose a fourth reason: ethical reasoning promotes fair accountability and sustains employee trust in leadership. Recently, my store failed an EcoSure assessment. Around that time, my store manager had been on leave for approximately two to three weeks following the death of a family friend and was terminated about a week after returning. I do not know the complete circumstances or whether the assessment contributed to his termination. However, if it did, ethical reasoning would require considering who was responsible for store operations during that period rather than assigning accountability to one individual. I believe everyone who contributed to the conditions identified during the assessment, myself included, should receive appropriate counseling or feedback. Accountability is necessary, but it should be fair, consistent, and consider the surrounding circumstances. This approach can strengthen employee trust in leadership while maintaining meaningful accountability.
