FULL TEXT The Ministry of the Environment and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) announced on Tuesday the strategic plan

and guidelines for the use of funds from the Amazon Fund for the next two years. The document was presented after a

meeting of the Amazon Fund Guidance Committee in Brasília.

The idea is for the fund to support projects that seek to reverse a series of trends identified in the Action Plan for the

Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAm), which was relaunched last month by the current

administration.

These trends include the internalization of deforestation, with the invasion of public lands; the re-concentration of

deforestation in large contiguous areas; the reduction of governance capacity in indigenous lands, protected areas, and

settlements; and an increase in forest degradation. An intensification of illegal deforestation in production chains has also

been identified.

"In the context of the new guidelines and priorities for the biennium, the Amazon Fund will play a central role in supporting

the efforts needed to reverse the new deforestation trends identified in the plan," the document released Tuesday states.

In light of the trends presented, it has been determined that the priority topics for the fund’s performance over the next 24

months will focus on development activities related to traditional communities and family farming, and the restoration and

conservation of public forests, in addition to land regularization.

Other priorities include improving deforestation control in private areas registered in the Rural Environment Registry (CAR)

and supporting sustainable productive activities "by promoting opportunities and economic instruments that help reduce

illegal deforestation."

Frozen during the Bolsonaro administration, the Amazon Fund has been reactivated. The instrument currently has funds

donated by the governments of Germany and Norway. New contributions have also been pledged by the United States, the

United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Union.
