OVERVIEW
This week students are introduced to policy institutes that are non-government organizations (NGO) having special interests in supporting their mission through policy analysis, research, and policy evaluation. Students identify how, as nursing leaders, they can impact policy through participation in and/or use of the NGO information through planned policy advocacy communication with a national political leader or their team.
In preparation for your signature assignment that is a policy proposal for a global health issue that also affects the US, begin by contacting the office of your state senator or Congressional representative and scheduling an appointment. (These politicians have local offices within your voting district where you should be able to visit with them or present via Zoom or other electronic means).
I met with “Sandy Nurse: NYC Council Member for District 37 (Bushwick, Brownsville, East New York in Brooklyn). I spoke to her during Gotham's health fair in the community on 8/7/2026
· At your meeting, the agenda should include your concerns about a global population health issue that also impacts the US, a supportive NGO, and progress that is being made through policy decisions.
· Additionally, based on your knowledge of the health issue you will propose a new policy or adjustment to a current policy to close the current gaps and meet the population needs. See the signature assignment for additional information.
· To prepare yourself for this meeting, review what Congress has been working on to improve the health of global populations. As a nurse leader, be prepared to discuss how to influence change through the strategies you have prepared.
· A summary of this meeting needs to be written up and future plans discussed as a part of your signature assignment. Provide the date of the meeting in this journal.
ASSIGNMENTS
Slide 1. Personal Evaluation of Workplace Environments: Describe a time when you undertook an evaluation of a workplace environment to assess levels of health and well-being. Slide 2-3. Exercising Cognitive Flexibility: Recall a challenging situation where you need to demonstrate cognitive flexibility in managing change within a complex environment. How did you approach the situation? Were there instances where you felt you succeeded or faltered? Reflect on the lessons learned and how they have informed your future decision-making processes.
Slide 4-5. Leading the Charge for the Nursing Profession: Share an experience where you felt you genuinely made strides in advancing the nursing profession. How did you provide leadership during this time? Were there specific moments of doubt or affirmation? Delve into the feelings and motivations that drove you and discuss any mentors or influences that guided your path.
Slide 5-6. Guiding Intentional Change with Leadership Theories: Think about a time when you were instrumental in influencing intentional change within a nursing context. Which leadership principles or theories did you lean on? Reflect on why you chose those particular theories and how they impacted the outcomes. How have these experiences shaped your views on leadership, and what theories or principles do you see as pivotal for your future leadership journey?
