Assignment Description:
Critiquing Qualitative PowerPoint
Based on what you have learned so far in this course, create a PowerPoint presentation that addresses each of the following points/questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Use clear headings that allow your professor to know which bullet you are addressing on the slides in your presentation. Support your content with at least four (4) sources throughout your presentation. Make sure to reference the citations using the APA writing style for the presentation. Include a slide for your references at the end. Follow best practices for PowerPoint presentations related to text size, color, images, effects, wordiness, and multimedia enhancements. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.
As part of identifying quality studies to address your gap/problem and to help inform your evidence-based practice change, understanding what you are selecting to support your initiative is vital. Selecting sound studies requires that you critique each study for reliability and validity concerns. For this week’s assignment, you will develop a PowerPoint presentation sharing your qualitative research critique.
Part A: Select one scholarly qualitative research article to critique. This Article should be selected through the scholarly databases you learned about earlier.
Your PowerPoint should follow APA standards. There should be a clear title page, introduction, body, conclusion, and references. You should have an audio voiceover discussion with detailed speaker notes explaining your findings. The use of images, graphs, or tables is encouraged to balance the white space and text. Images must not be copyrighted and should be properly APA cited.
The body slides should address the following (be sure to support your rationale with scholarly sources):
Slide One:
Title – What is the title? Does it accurately describe the article? Is it clear, accurate, and unambiguous?
Abstract – Is it representative of the article? Describe the areas of the abstract the authors covered. Did the abstract provide a clear overview of the study? What could be improved in the abstract coverage?
The Introduction – Does it make the purpose of the article clear?
statement of the phenomenon of Interest – Is the phenomenon adequately introduced and does it coincide with the proposed research question?
Slide Two:
Purpose of the study – Has the reason for conducting the research been explained? If not, what could be done to improve the purpose’s description? What take-away did you glean from their purpose?
Slide Three:
Research question(s) – Is/are the research question(s) clearly defined, and if not, should they be? Evaluate how their proposed question links with their problem statement and purpose. Share your findings and explain what makes their question appropriate or what you are concerned with.
Slide Four:
Theoretical framework – Is the theoretical framework described and appropriate? If there is not a theoretical framework, should there be? What theoretical science model/theory would be applicable if applied to this study? Explain your rationale for your selection.
Slide Five:
Literature review – Is the literature review relevant to the study, comprehensive, and includes recent research? How many studies were included, and were they recent? Does the literature review support the need for the study? Explain how they organized their literature review. What would you have done differently when presenting the information?
Slide Six:
Methods – Have the philosophical underpinnings of their approach been explained? What type of design did they use? Is the design appropriate for the study? Explain your rationale for why it is an appropriate design. If you disagree, what approach might have been better?
Slide Seven:
Sampling – Explain the type of sampling the researchers used. Does the sample fit with the research design, and were the participants suitable for informing research? Explain your rationale.
Ethical Considerations – were the participants fully informed? Was ethical permission granted (IRB)? Describe how the participants were protected from harm.
Slide Eight:
Analysis – Are the strategies used to analyze the data described? Was data saturation achieved? Explain the type of data collection method that was used. Is the analytical approach consistent with the study question and research design? Explain your rationale for your answer.
Slide Nine:
Results – Are the results presented clearly in the text, tables, and figures? Have the findings been placed in the context of what was already known of the phenomenon? Has the original purpose of the study been adequately addressed?
Limitations – Are the limitations presented and their implications discussed? Share your impression on how well they presented their results and limitations.
Slide Ten:
Discussion – are the importance and implications of the findings identified?
Conclusion – Are there recommendations directed towards clinical practice, future research, and policymakers?
General study overview- was the report well written, do the researcher’s qualifications/position indicate a degree of knowledge? Were all the alluded to references in the study accurately referenced?
Slide Eleven:
Determine the level and quality of the evidence using a scale John Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice: Appendix D: Evidence level and quality guide found in Additional Resources . Is the level and quality of your selected study appropriate? Explain your rationale.
Slide Twelve:
Share your overall impression and experience with reading this study. Can you use the results and recommendations in your practice? Will this study help support your proposed quality improvement project gap? How do you envision the study’s findings playing a role in supporting your project?
Part B: Upload a copy of your selected scholarly qualitative study.
Start by reading and following these instructions:
1. Study the required chapter(s) of the textbook and any additional recommended resources. Some answers may require you to do additional research on the Internet or in other reference sources. Choose your sources carefully.
