Addressing Homelessness Through Strength-Based, People-First Language
For the Final Project, I have decided to concentrate on homelessness, a critical issue related to the human services profession that affects my community and the entire world. I chose the topic of homelessness because I have seen its impact in practice when I was working as a human services worker. I have seen the difficulties that people who are homeless have in finding and maintaining housing and the challenges they encounter in trying to access needed resources.
Over the years, homeless people have been labelled with derogatory terms that have the potential to diminish their humanity, for instance, the use of the term 'the homeless' or 'vagrants' (Murray et al., 2024). Such language creates the impression that being homeless is an unchangeable state in the person.
To reframe the issue using strength-based, people-first language, I will refer to homelessness as “people who are experiencing housing unsteadiness.” This language does not focus on the problem itself but on the fact that individuals are facing it and the capacity they have to overcome it. In this regard, I compare homelessness to sailing through a stormy sea where people require a safe haven to seek refuge and ultimately return to the shore. This metaphor points towards the facet of strength and the possibility of renewal, which becomes possible with the support of the community and its resources in order to help the person in question get back on his/her feet and lead a normal life again.
By using careful language when discussing homelessness and ensuring that there is a clear plan in place to address the issue, it is possible to build a better society that is more accepting of homeless people, which can lead to long-term change.

COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT PLAN—PROBLEM SCOPE
In Discussion 2 last week, you identified a social problem to focus on for your Final Project. You also examined how the problem has been framed in the past and how it should be reframed using strength-based, people-first language. For this Assignment, you will re-visit these areas as you work on the problem scope for your Final Project. As you do so, you will build on the idea that the language of social change matters. You will also use Stroh’s (2015) systems thinking framework to better understand the social problem that you selected.
Stroh, D. P. (2015). Systems thinking for social change: A practical guide to solving complex problems, avoiding unintended consequences, and achieving lasting results. Chelsea Green Publishing.
RESOURCES
Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.
TO PREPARE
· Reflect on the social problem that you selected for your Final Project. Consider any changes you would make to how you framed the problem, based on feedback that you received from your peers and your Instructor last week.
· Review the Learning Resources on systems thinking. Consider how you would use the four challenges of change in Stroh’s (2015) systems thinking framework to better understand your social problem. In addition, consider the differences between using a systems approach and a conventional, linear approach to address the problem.
BY DAY 7
Submit a 2-to-3-page paper (not including a title page or reference list) that addresses the following components of the Final Project.
· State the Problem You Selected. Provide a succinct statement that articulates what you currently know about the problem, based on what you learned from your peers, your Instructor, and/or the Learning Resources this week and last week.
· Reframe the Problem. Explain how the problem has been framed in the past. Then, reframe the problem using people-first, strength-based language. Be sure to incorporate any feedback that you received from your peers or Instructor last week.
· Apply Systems Thinking to Understand the Problem. Using the MCFL systems thinking framework from the Stroh text, describe the problem in terms of:
· Motivation: Why should things change?
· Collaboration: Who is affected and who are the stakeholders?
· Focus: Why should stakeholders collaborate to solve the problem? What should be done to leverage change?
· Learning: Why should the public bother to make the change? What do they need to learn? What is missing (needs)? What language should be used to frame the overall social problem?
· Explain the differences between using a conventional, linear approach versus a systems approach to address the problem. What are the major differences?
