Assignment 1: Autobiography

Begin this assignment by introducing yourself to classmates—giving your name, current occupation, and areas of interest that this course might cover. Discuss how you plan to use your degree program in the future. As you share your ideas, observations, and experiences, keep in mind that this discussion is an opportunity for you to get to know your peers and instructor. How do you feel about sharing this personal information online?

Next, take a moment to consider how you communicate in your daily professional and personal life and answer the following questions:

• What is your personal style of written communication?
  • Are your written communications short and to-the-point or long and detail-oriented?
  • Do you prefer to communicate in words, pictures, numbers, or a combination of all three?
• Consider how other people might view your communications. Share one example of how you might use technology to improve your communication style to more successfully convey your ideas to diverse audiences.
• When you state a “fact” during a discussion, do you also state where you got that fact? Why or why not? Does this change at all if you are communicating in-person, online, by telephone, in writing, etc.?
• Do you copy and paste, forward, or share things you find on the Internet? If so, do you always, sometimes, or never state where you found the item?
• If you copy the work produced by others, do you ever worry that someone will copy your work and claim it is their own?
