NAME:

1) The first thing a playwright needs to do is decide what the subject of the play is. What else must the playwright do with that subject once they have chosen it?

2) Describe some possible PURPOSES of a play. (What is the playwright trying to do to their audience?) Name at least 3.

3) What is a (general) LINEAR Plot type?

4) What is an EPISODIC (or NON-LINEAR) Plot type?

5) A LINEAR plot can have episodic structure. Explain what that means. (Refer to the PDF with notes on types of plots vs. types of structure.)

6) What is a CLIMACTIC structure? What type of PLOT is it—Linear, or Non-Linear?

7) Which gives the playwright more control over their work? Writing for film & TV or for the theatre? Why? Explain the difference(s.) (NOTE: Read the PDF from the text about writing for theatre, film and TV.)

8) You want to produce a play with your local high school. You’re doing a musical called The Music Man . How do you go about getting the permission, materials and rights to do that play? Why?

Part B

Critique #1 due Oct. 6

This is where you turn in your first critique paper, due Oct. 6. It needs to be done on either a play you see in the theatre, or on a recorded stage production. See the written and video assignment above for details on completing this successfully.  Remember that one of the two critiques needs to be on a play or musical that you see in person at a theatre, with pictures taken for proof of attendance.

Part C
