After you have created your new discussion topic, you are required to read and respond to a minimum of 2 of your classmates discussion topics. Think of your responses in terms of a contribution to a dialogue, not a writing exercise or a chat room. Elaborate a single idea and keep your post short but concise as if you were holding a conversation with your classmate(s). Incorporate what you have learned from the weekly reading material and from your own real-world experiences. Don’t forget to use proper APA citations and references whenever necessary.
Kanysia: "Most biological agents have an incubation period before outward signs of disease become apparent in their victims" (Ryan, 2016). Emergency response personnel can be considered the first line of defense. Honestly anyone can report suspicious or hazardous items and keep an eye out for any unusual trends in people, animals, or certain areas. It would be best to stay away from what is being reported, as getting too close can be dangerous and harmful. If there are quite a few symptoms and signs in one area that are associated with said threat, the medical community should be alerted about there being a possibility that a biological agent has occurred. This can help to notify responders or even public health officials to interview the patients and their close contacts in order to gain a better understanding and note anything alarming. Once notified, they will likely inform the individuals about the protocols and secure the area. Reference: Ryan, J. R. (2016). Patrick: A responder or individual should follow certain rules and procedures when they recognize something that is suspicious or hazardous. The most important procedure is to be sure to wear all PPE when near a suspicious or hazardous area, person, or item. PPE (personal protective equipment) includes "negative-pressure air-purifying respirators with Occupational Safety and Health Administration–approved CBRNE filters, Tyvek®-type coveralls with a hood, latex outer gloves, and over boots" (Jeffery, 2016). Responders or individuals should also take blood borne pathogen precautions when treating patients or dealing with something that is suspicious or hazardous. Another step that should be taken is isolation of the area, person, or item that is suspicious or hazardous so it does not spread and harm other areas, people, or items. Lastly, a responder or individual should notify the appropriate people for investigation and clean up of the suspicious or hazardous area, person, or item. All of these steps together can keep people safe and the suspicious or hazardous item contained.

Book: M. M. Lowenthal (2022). Intelligence: from Secrets to Policy 9th edition. CQ Press.
Serenity: There are several variables that have a direct impact intelligence collection. Our book discusses these variables from all angles but here are a two of the common themes: Budget- Like discussed in later weeks, the budget is very important to government operations. The majority of the intelligence collections budget is spent on technical systems and equipment. One expensive piece of intelligence equipment is satellites. Intelligence is operating many different satellites because each satellite does different jobs like capturing signals or imagery. Collection Collaborations- Having multiple ways to collect data allows one of the systems can assist another by providing cues or information. The goal of the intelligence agency has been to achieve all-source intelligence. All-source intelligence is based on the concept of having as many sources of collections possible to achieve maximum profit from their collaborative strength. According to the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, the DNI ensures intelligence that considers all possible sources of intelligence. Collaborative collections can help produce a product that consists of all sources which is required by the DNI. After intelligence is collected, being able to protect the highly classified data is of utmost importance. One of the ways that the data is protected is by keeping the sources and methods of collection classified. References: Lowenthal, M. M. (2022). Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy. CQ Press.
Juan: The two main factors that drive intelligence collection according to our reading are “the nature of the intelligence being sought and the ability to acquire it in various ways”. In other words, why do we need the information and what means are available to obtain as much as possible. This brings us to the term all-source intelligence. This simply means information that is gathered from multiple sources such as imagery, signals and human intelligence. This is very important as information from multiple sources will provide overlapping information that can help fill in gaps of missing information. Intelligence sources are protected by information being shared only with those that absolutely have a need to know.

Johnathan: Scenario 2: A bus carrying 40 high school students has overturned on a freeway in Oklahoma. Injuries range from minor to major and some students have died. How can triage be applied in this situation?
Triage can be applied in this situation by assessing those students who are injured from minor to major. This is because Triage is an assessment and categorization of injuries for treatment based on the severity (McEntire, D. A. 2014). The most common triage system utilized in the United States is called START which stands for (simple triage and rapid treatment). The START system is utilized for patients who are above the age of eight years old seeing as the patients in this scenario are high schoolers this is the method that will be utilized (Yancey CC., 2022). The condition and status of the 40 students should be classified within 60 seconds with various criteria taken into account such as the presence of bleeding, respiratory rate, pulse, and the patient's ability to follow commands. If any of the 40 high schoolers have a low pulse, are bleeding, have a low respiratory rate, and cannot follow commands after the overturning of the bus they can be put into a category reflecting this severity as will those who are minorly injured. These categorizations are used to prevent individuals who do not need additional medical care from being sent anyway. Those who are severely injured then should be immediately transported to the nearest emergency room for proper care for their injuries and further monitoring. In addition to this, the hospitals receiving patients from the overturned bus should receive ample notification so that a room is prepared for the majorly injured and they can be seen immediately upon arrival. However, for those who are able to follow commands and have a good respiratory rate, pulse, and no signs of bleeding first responders then can asses their minor injuries and carry out the necessary procedures. However, these necessary procedures for the minorly injured should only be taken after the needs of the people who have severe injuries have been met and once they have received proper immediate care, and have been successfully transported per the guidelines of triage. The necessary procedures carried out by EMTs and EMS workers arriving on the scene include providing basic first aid to those with minor injuries.

Brooklyn: n a major accident such as a bus overturning with forty people inside, resulting in the death of some of the passengers on board is devastating. Triage is one of the most crucial factors in emergency situations, it is even used on an everyday basis in emergency rooms and doctor's offices. Mass casualties require the medical personnel to evaluate the extent of injuries on those affected, and then determine if they need immediate medical attention. They would provide medical attention to those with injuries that can be treated by the medical professionals in the field, and some are immediately transported to the nearest hospital. As for those who have succumbed to their injuries, they will be appropriately dealt with, and those personnel will work to notify the families of those who passed. Some medical professionals even volunteer to assist at the scene, using it as a waiting room for the hospitals who will have an influx of patients. One of the more challenging aspects is when the families get involved and are looking for updates, so then you must also ensure you are providing them with information whenever possible.
