Peer Responses Week 4

Sabrina: If I were in Lilly’s shoes, I would feel very anxious, embarrassed, and even isolated. The situation would likely bring back painful memories of being bullied in high school. This could make it even more challenging for her to focus on her studies and feel comfortable in a new environment. To prevent similar situations in the future, a plan of action can include support groups, mentorships programs, and even anti-bullying policies. The actions of the students that did make fun of Lilly more than likely created a hostile and very uncomfortable class environment.

People do not realize that such behavior can discourage participation or even foster a different level of disrespect. To show civility and empathy, the students could have shown understanding. Meaning they could and should have recognized that everyone has bad days and that their actions can significantly impact someone’s feelings. Being a good student leader goes a long way and could have changed her in so many ways. A student leader could have offered support, welcomed her, or even just created a positive environment for her. No one is perfect, and it is never ok to make someone uncomfortable this way. Personally, I have never encountered a similar situation, but I do know that it can happen on any given day.

Logue: If I were in Lily's shoes, I would have felt the same way that she did; especially if I came in already feeling insecure about myself and having shame about my current situation. I believe one plan of action Lily could take that would help to prevent this situation in the future, would be to find the girls an alternative ride to school if possible. Maybe they could take the bus, carpool with a classmate who lives nearby, or maybe their dad could even take them if he is around and able. If an alternative ride to school is not another option, Lily could keep things in her car for hectic mornings. For instance, she could keep a change of clothes, self-care products like a brush, extra makeup, or even some hair products for bad hair days. Sometimes in our situations we are not able to prevent disaster, but we do always have the choice to be prepared for it. Sometimes these things just happen, especially when we have multiple things going on like being parents, school, and work. Trying to juggle all that at one time, we are human and bound for things to be hectic. In bullying Lily, her classmates only expanded her insecurities in herself. This type of energy disrupts the entire room, by adding an uncomfortable energy that others can also sense. Lily now feels like she is embarrassed to go to class and feels down on herself. This makes it harder for her to feel confident in her abilities and want to participate actively in class. When others see this type of scared behavior, they will pick up on it too. From this experience with Lily's classmates, I believe it is safe for us to make an inference that this is not the first or only time they have exhibited this behavior. Instead of mocking Lily, her classmates should've given her words of encouragement and expressed how no one is perfect, and everyone has bad days. They robbed Lily of her already fragile confidence and only made her feel worse. If someone would've been a good student leader to Lily, they would've come up to her and encouraged her to not let the opinions of others, especially people who don't even know her, affect her. Seeing this type of support and empowerment could have really changed how Lily allowed this to affect her confidence. Instead, Lily left feeling even more powerless than she did coming in. I relate a lot to Lily, because there have been multiple occasions where I have been mocked or made fun of. I too responded as Lily did, and hung my head low and let it change how I felt about myself. I wish I knew then what I now know. Often time those who are treating us this way are either just mean and not worth the emotional turmoil or they feel bad about their own lives and want to project it on to other people. I wish that in handling this differently, I would have communicated to those involved how their actions and words have consequences. For me this took place at school, and I often wish I would've told a teacher, so they could have received punishment and learned it is not okay to treat people this way. Instead, I said nothing, and they got away with it on many occasions. Maybe this would have been a learning lesson for them, or maybe it wouldn't have changed anything at all, but at least I would have gained some of my power back by saying you cannot treat me this way- I will not allow it.

Malcolm: Computer viruses are maliciously designed by cybercriminals for different intents and purposes, one of which is to steal money, data, or cause disruptions. These computer viruses are considered to be some of the most malicious software developed by mankind. As stated in a blog by Baker (2024), malware which includes trojans, ransomware, and spyware are used to gain access to information or to extort money for the release of information. Viruses such as the malware in question, can be used to harvest personal information such as credit card numbers and passcodes to steal identities. This act puts the victim at an increased risk of losing a significant amount of money in their bank accounts.

In some instances, cybercriminals may use computer viruses to disrupt business operations or damage political entities, causing a wide range of damages rather than specifically targeting individuals or businesses. Computer viruses are maliciously designed by cybercriminals for different intents and purposes, one of which is to steal money, data, or cause disruptions. ‘The consequences of cybercrime tend to be deeply personal and profoundly impactful to both individuals and organizations,’ ECPI University (2024) writes. ‘Victims of cyber-attacks often experience a severe financial strain and lasting emotional scars. For organizations, the effects of a breach can include operational disruptions, financial losses and diplomatic turmoil.’ A breach could smear a company’s reputation, earn the loss of customers, and bring about enormous legal penalties and remediation fees.

Hudson:  There is an extreme amount of damage that can be caused by malicious viruses. The damage that is derived from this can come anywhere from deleting and modifying files to compromised security. Hackers will use vulnerabilities as a way to go through with their malicious attacks and attack as well as compromise whatever they can. A virus is a program that is written for a specific function. These programs have the ability to have a malicious intent to shut down a business or steal an identity. There are many types of malicious viruses, and they have the ability to seriously disrupt a computer or system. These types of malicious viruses can come from worms, Trojan horses, adware or spyware, logic bombs, denial-of-service attacks, and blended threats (Taylor, 2018). These are the main types although it could be argued that there are others that should be on the list. Each of these forms have their own characteristics and methods that serve a function to allow the hacker to choose the best way to infiltrate and use the malicious virus for whatever the intent is. There are many reasons as to the reasons why cybercriminals will use computer viruses for their attacks. One of the main reasons as to why is because technology Is growing so much that there are more and more systems for them to hack into every day and with so many people having computers and phones there is a countless number of targets available. Along with the number of people, within those systems there are vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities create an exposure that allows hackers to gain access to computers and networks to carry out their attacks. There is a strong need for continued research to keep up with the changing environment and malicious software creators to be able to stay on top of the evolving systems. It is important that while cyberattack abilities and methods are growing and evolving so are the technologies to prevent them. Knowledge on the subject and software on computers to monitor traffic and enable firewalls that better defend against these attacks are more important than ever.

Spencer:   The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is very important for keeping the US safe because it uses information to find and deal with risks to national security. This work is led by the DHS Office of information and Analysis (I&A), whose job it is to collect, analyze, and share information to help the department do its job. The I&A works together with private sector, government, state, local, tribe, and territorial partners to make sure that everyone has a full picture of possible risks like terrorism, cyberattacks, and natural disasters. The I&A uses many different types of data to give useful information that helps make policy choices and operational plans. This makes the country stronger and more ready. But there are a lot of things that make it hard for homeland security to share information effectively. One big problem is that different agencies and states don't always trust and work together, which can make people reluctant to share private data. Also, variations in technology systems and data types can make it harder to combine and analyze intelligence, creating "silos" that make it hard to share information quickly. Concerns about privacy and civil rights also come into play, since tight rules may make it impossible to share some types of data. Also, not having standard procedures for sharing information can lead to different agencies using different methods, which makes it harder for everyone to react to threats. Getting rid of these problems is necessary to make the environment for sharing information in the homeland security system stronger and more useful.
