                                             CLASSMATE’S POST

Forensic science is a great asset to traditional detective work. When a crime occurs and the suspect/offender leaves DNA at the scene of the crime this can be collected, sent off to either a private lab or state lab where it can be analyzed, and then either confirm that the person who is considered a suspect/offender a match or clear them as having nothing to do with the incident. Two years ago I worked a homicide where no one would provide any information to the crime and my suspect list was very long based on who the victim was. After interviewing several individual to include the offender there still was not enough evidence to charge him at the time. It wasn't until I sent my casings and projectiles were entered into NIBIN where we received a match to another shooting and the person of interest was who I suspected as my offender. After several more interviews with the offender a search warrant was conducted on his residence and the weapon used was located in his bedroom. He claimed to have just purchased the weapon two days prior to the search warrant being completed so again I conducted another search warrant to collect his DNA, sent it to the lab with the firearm so a touch DNA test could be completed, and the final result was only his DNA was found to be on the firearm.
