Three Different Leadership Styles

Behavioral leadership theory – this focuses on the actions and behaviors of a leader to allow their direct reports to learn from them in hopes of acquiring skills to be a good leader as well.

Contingency theory of leadership – often called situational leadership. This is a very versatile style. Leaders adapt their leadership style based on the need to increase innovation and effectiveness. This style gives the skills and knowledge required to tackle difficult situations.

Transactional leadership – This leadership revolves around reward and punishment. Very focused on achieving the goals that are set.

Advantages and disadvantages

Transactional can be very messy, almost like parenting in my opinion. If there is a difference of opinion on right and wrong that could cause issues. Advantage would be getting rewarded when you do well.

Situational would be nice, having a leader that adapts to what you need. To me that would be very helpful for someone just starting with a company and looking to stay and grow.

Any of these leadership styles can be good or bad depending on the person leading. They can be a good leader, or one there for the paycheck.

I think situational would be the best leadership style for this instance. It can be versatile and mold to fit any situation. I understand that all those things listed are important, but I don’t feel that anyone should be treated differently due to a difference they may have from others.

DISCUSSION 2 (Tameka)

Define three leadership styles

The Bureaucrat: This is the type of leadership that I am currently under. This leadership style follows a chain-of-command type of system. Much like the army, all decisions are made based on policy and procedures that are prewritten. This type of leadership style forces people to conform to rules and regulations rather than being a part of the establishment of those rules and regulations. You choose your job when you join the army however, you are given tasks based on how much you know (competence).

The Expert: These types of leaders are known for being the subject matter experts. These types of leaders may have a big ego. They speak more on an “I” basis instead of highlighting the team. It is hard to correct this leadership style because these types of leaders think they know it all. These leaders may not trust their subordinates and may fact-check their work all the time. These types of leaders are very smart and do contribute a lot to the team.

The Autocrat: This type of leadership style puts one person in charge and he or she is the dictator of all decisions and has full control over everything. This type of style limits the team to what the leader wants. The team will have little input when it comes to making decisions. This type of leadership style is good in emergency salutations where decisions must be made quickly and with little time for input from others.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these styles

The advantage of the bureaucrat leadership style is that everyone has a clear idea of their role within the team. A disadvantage would be no creativity. An advantage of the expert leadership style would be that they know the ins and outs of the organization and would be able to effectively solve problems. A disadvantage is that these types of leaders do not take correction very well. An advantage of the autocrat would be how swiftly they react in emergency or stressful situations. A disadvantage would be that they like to be in total control of everything.

I have found that a team works better when their input and concerns are taken seriously and considered by their leader. “Supportive leaders are accessible to their staff, transparent about their choices, team players, and adept communicators of plans and

tactics” (Simplilearn, 2023). Subordinates should be included when new rules are added rather than just given new rules and being told to follow them. We have climate surveys in the army and these surveys give soldiers a chance to voice their opinions about a wide range of issues. Our uniforms were not warm enough in the winter and too heavy in the summer and that led to the new winter and summer uniforms. Sounds small but it is not. They considered the soldier's words and changed something, and I believe that leaders are there to make sure their subordinates are equipped to do their jobs.
