Read 'Competing on Analytics' an article in Harvard Business Review by Tom Davenport 
The author has posted a free version of the article at:

On page 6 the authors give examples of business functions  and use of data to be competitve for each function. This article was published in 2006. 
For each of the seven functions, share descriptions of examplars from within the last five years.
