Week 8 Discussion: Urbanization, Environment, and Social Change
Part 1:
Air pollution is a problem that has arisen as a result of urbanization. The Week 8 materials emphasize the connection between fast urbanization, the rise of polluting industries like manufacturing and transportation, and the rising need for energy (University of Maryland Global Campus, n.d.). More people and more businesses in metropolitan areas mean more energy and transportation needs, which means more pollution from fossil fuels. These pollutants include particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. The demand for more cars on the road and more power to heat and fantastic cities is directly related to the rising urban population (University of Maryland Global Campus, n.d.). These elements combine to create hazardous air that may cause respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular problems, and even early death. Climate change and ecological collapse are only two of the many adverse effects that air pollution may have on the planet.
Part 2:
The grassroots movement seems to be the most successful in dealing with the air pollution problem among the social activities covered in the learning materials. Grassroots campaigns often start with people in the impacted areas banding together to solve a common problem. Residents, activists, and environmental groups may join forces to educate the public about the dangers of air pollution on human health and natural ecosystems (University of Maryland Global Campus, n.d.). One ingenious approach to combating air pollution and galvanizing support for the underdog campaign is to have annual "Clean Air Days." Communities may host activities and campaigns on these days to encourage people to adopt greener lifestyles by switching to public transportation, carpooling, or bicycling instead of driving, decreasing energy use, and increasing tree planting (University of Maryland Global Campus, n.d.). Spreading the word and informing the public about the need for clean air via partnerships with local schools, companies, and media would be crucial in winning over many people.
